Now that the Conservatives seem to be out of contention for Hazel Grove, I can see the Lib Dem tactical voting unwinding for the next election. The estimated Ward results on another thread shows Labour taking Manor, Offerton and Bredbury, with the Lib Dems winning in other four Wards. It will require more demographic change to bring Labour into contention, but it remains a possibility. But then you will get Tories voting tactically for the LDs against Labour. Except that the Conservatives propped up a Labour minority administration in Stockport until recently. Also don’t forget that Bredbury was solidly Liberal/Lib Dem for 40 years while Offerton and Manor were at times safe areas for them.

Labour did indeed come second here. Lib Dem 37.7% Lab 23.5% Con 19.6% Reform 15.1% Green 3.8% SDP 0.2% I wonder how much damage the Wragg factor caused for the conservatives here. Clearly in Fylde though Menzies didn’t do enough damage. And in a hypothetical situation where Wragg didn't do what he did and stood again, would he have at least come second? Wragg did not stand, as he had declared before the scandal broke (publicly).

Labour will need a very good term to accomplish it I think. Mid-terms if they go as they do traditionally should see the Lib Dem’s start pulling apart the Labour wards, of course if the Conservatives can get themselves back together they can also start to fight back onto the council. By 2029 it might well be Con vs Lib Dem again if this term doesn’t go well for Labour.

We don't have mid terms. Does Stockport elect by 3rds?

Council elections 2-3 years into a parliament are commonly (even if incorrectly) referred to as mid term elections for the government.

Council elections 2-3 years into a parliament are commonly (even if incorrectly) referred to as mid term elections for the government. Mid-term elections are another example of creeping Americanisms which have been introduced by commentators. They are totally inappropriate in most cases. We do not have fixed terms for General Elections so the concept is meaningless.
