On the face of it, earnestly reporting that a party is ahead in a particular riding after 10 votes have been counted seems idiotic. Maybe they do it because there's nothing else to talk about. Very common in Canadian election broadcasts. They admit it means nothing but they still excitedly talk about it for the first hour...

One of the odd things about Canadian election results broadcasting is the way everyone seems to regard the first votes from a Riding as being massively significant in showing which way things are going, even when the number of votes is tiny. Watching the 1993 election night show the other week I was frustrated that CBC lumped together ridings where a party had a lead (even after a handful of polling stations) with ones where a result had been determined, so that the rolling totals of seats won kept reducing as well as increasing. Seemed an oddly unhelpful way to present the results. Does anyone know if they’ve changed this presentationally since then? Fraid not.

I also found it confusing that they used "declared" for what was actually "our call" rather than "the officials actually in charge of counting this have made the formal announcement as to who won".

For those who don't want to search through websites to find the live stream, here's a link to the CBC vid on YouTube. About to start:

I predict that the Communist Party will get more votes per candidate than the Marxist-Leninist Party. Usually the M-L party has more candidates but fewer votes. I predict that the Rhinoceros Party will not win any seats.

For those who don't want to search through websites to find the live stream, here's a link to the CBC vid on YouTube. About to start: Already unbearable! They are talking like the Conservatives have gained a seat when 87 votes there have been counted in just one of the 265 polling places (which then doesn't include postal votes).
It's one thing to call a seat when it looks likely a party will win, but this is something else.

Seemed an oddly unhelpful way to present the results. Does anyone know if they’ve changed this presentationally since then? From the early numbers, sadly not. They seem to think that 100 votes are a good indicator of the outcome.

From provincial to federal elections, Canadian election coverage does this all the time. Unbearable. Honestly I'm not even watching the stream until 1am

The main thing I'm certain about so far is that one of the X-Men is defending a seat.

And I thought our election nights were long, drawn-out and tedious....

That's it, I am off to bed. I rejoice in watching the results from elections in which I have no personal interest, but not when the coverage is so bloody uminteresting.

I have something unrelated on in the background, and may stick with it for an hour or so, but I doubt I'm going to stay up all night for this one.

Not that I share some people's obsession with PR, but BQ leading a seat with 210 votes and the NDP failing to do so on 40.818 votes is probably a good argument for it in someone's book.
