The Tories lost their last fortress (SKP, YP, "Lib." in QC and BC not counted of course). 60:30:10. Rather many seats for them (5-7).

Certainly no surprise, the Tories have governed for 12 years, the Liberals 10 after 13 of their opponents a.s.o.

Liberals have terrifying results in their rural West Newfoundland stronghold, including a 97% win in Burgeo-La Poile (97 Lab, 2 PC, 1 NDP) or in votes Lab 3998, PC 93, NDP 53.
I doubt there is victories that big in any democracy (not even in Knowsley local elections).

Yeah, this looks like a 'normal' Newfie 'Liberal' landslide rather than Destroys All Life On Earth.

Two candidates who were MPs until October had differing fortunes yesterday. Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte Liberal MP Gerry Byrne who stood down at the federal election was easily elected for the N&L Libs in the 'merged' riding of Corner Brook with 67% of the vote. Maverick ex-NDP MP Ryan Cleary, who lost by 9,500 to the Liberals in St. John's South—Mount Pearl in October, bizarrely switched to the N&L PCs for this election and got soundly beaten in the new Windsor Lake riding garnering only 20% compared to the winning Liberal's 66%.

In the speech from the throne, the new Liberal government has pledged to make 2015 the last Canadian election which uses first past the post.

In the speech from the throne, the new Liberal government has pledged to make 2015 the last Canadian election which uses first past the post. That's a bit surprising, because the main parties in Canada seem to have been attached to the idea that they can still win majorities under FPTP in the long term. Have they said which other system they prefer?

Have they said which other system they prefer? There was a 'anyone but Conservative' tactical voting at the last election as they were so unpopular, so maybe the Liberals realise that they could always remain in government as part of a larger block of parties including the NDP and the Greens, usually as the senior part of a coalition.

Have they said which other system they prefer? It was in the Liberal Party's manifesto. They didn't specify which system they would prefer to replace it, instead form an all party committee to come up with proposals: www.liberal.ca/realchange/electoral-reform/

Yeah, Sask has been the least interesting of all Provinces for the last few elections cycles. Manitoba should be more exciting in a couple of weeks.
I don't think there are any major municipal races scheduled this year, but the Yukon will hold a legislative election in the autumn.

With most boxes counted it stands 63.5:29.0. 48:13 seats, so 3 gains for NDP, quite good with those percentages; still, their leader is behind presently.

With some votes uncounted we are at:
51 : 10 (+/-2 both, thus no NetChange) 62.5 : 30.3 (-1.7 both, so no swing)
And the OppositionLeader has indeed lost his seat.

A sloppy and unprofessional campaign was punished; annoying given that the opportunity for solid gains was actually there. Silver lining: a seat picked up in Prince Albert.

Canadian NDP knifes Thomas Mulcair (their leader), 52% of delegates at the NDP Convention vote for a leadership race.
Most likely punished for trying to put the party closer to the centre (which was an error because Liberals did move to the left at the same time, leaving both parties trying to cater to the exact same position, and, obviously, Liberal machine is stronger).
Centrism in left-wing parties is not popular around the world too, see Sanders or Corbyn.

That's actually a better result for the NDP (in seat terms at least) than it might have been.

Well its better than it was looking last year, yes. Still a terrible result and they've lost a bunch of places they have no business losing. On the bright side (however) the new government is likely to be a trainwreck so expect them to be back next time around...
