Can he afford to stand without the party machine? Do you seriously think that Corbyn will have a shortage of volunteers to help on his campaign? Will they be the right sort of volunteers though? A load of hardcore Trots knocking on doors may put off the soft left voters that Corbyn needs to win.

I have never been a Corbynite but have viewed him as both a great campaigner and man of principle. The CLP clearly wishes to readopt him but are barred by the Stalinism of Starmer and hi s apparatchiks. They have really left him with little choice. Whilst he will lose his party membership , that may not be permanent. There are many examples of people leaving or being expelled from the party who are later readmitted. Luciana Berger comes to mind. Corbyn is the one whose views are closer to Stalinism. The fact that Starmer keeps a pretty tight rein on the Labour Party does not make him a Stalinist. In what ways are Corybn's views remotely close to Stalinism? The original poster's were in regards to party democracy, or lack of thereof; compared to Corybn, Starmer keeps an iron grip over selections, investigations, etc.

Also would local Labour members campaign heaving against him or would they suddenly decide that Islington South & Finsbury is a better place to pop out to campaign to?

A load of hardcore Trots knocking on doors may put off the soft left voters that Corbyn needs to win. In a campaign like this any volunteer is the right volunteer. Voters just need an impression that you can win, which needs some ground presence. Livingston's independent campaign was plagued with the worst type of lefties but it didn't matter. And Galloway won the white vote in his by-elections with largely Muslim volunteers. When the novelty wears off then the type of activist matters.

The first year since 1992 that Jeremy BERNARD Corbyn (I) and BERNARD Sanders (I) are up for re-election in the same year. For the first time both as independents. But both with very different approaches to their respective hegemonic centre left party.

The only other former Labour Party Leader to get thrown out for opposing the party was Ramsay MacDonald.

Good day for popcorn sales.
I'll go against the grain; I think it will be close and I'd make Labour favourites. No doubt that Corbyn has many online and outside fanatical followers and he'll have no shortage of campaigners.
But critical mass against a Labour party serious about winning, that's known it's facing a fight here for ages and surrounded by safe Labour seats? I think the red team may prevail.
But it will be fascinating.

And Islington North should fall into their lap when Corbyn retires or dies.

In the seemingly plausible (albeit probably not the most likely) scenario that Corbyn wins this and Pete Wishart loses his race, Corbyn will be the MP with the longest continuous spell in opposition.

Albeit Corbyn will produce one of the strongest independence challenges for a while and I wouldn’t exactly bet my house on the outcome
