The first signs of political activity this evening with supporters of Tahir Mirza (standing as an Independent NOT a Newham Independent) handing out leaflets outside East Ham station.
The A4 leaflet has three pictures of Tahir Mirza with Jeremy Corbyn and one with George Galloway (who apparently supports him suggesting we won't have a Workers' Party candidate). MIrza used to be Chair of East Ham CLP until he and his colleagues were thrown out by Starmer.
The leaflet goes strong on Gaza but also has a good go at the Council.
At the moment, we have no named candidates for either the LDs or the Conservatives.

No SOPN on the Newham Council website so I have no clue who has been nominated in East Ham.

To add to the election buzz we've now had a leaflet from Anand Kumar Sundar by which I mean I've seen a leaflet.
Haven't actually got one myself yet - I suspect he was doing the tube station yesterday evening or this morning.
Nothing yet from Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Green or Reform.

The election fever ramped up a notch in East Ham High Street this morning with the appearance of Sir Stephen Timms and half a dozen of his activists (including a couple of Newham Councillors).
They had their usual pitch at the corner near the fish and chip shop and Sainsburys but Timms, who looks much older, was taking a steady stream of conversations from constituents.
Elsewhere, a couple of the local Hindu-owned businesses are displaying posters for Anand Kumar.

If we had primaries, which hopefully Labour bring in if/when they lose Brighton Pavilion, Chingford and Islington North, there's no way in hell some white boomer would win the nomination for a seat like this one, surely? That said, Akehurst probably wouldn't get selected anywhere either.

You don't get fuck ups like what happened in Chingford & Woodford Green? CLPs aren't very representative in some cases. If we had a primary in Brighton Pavilion, I believe Eddie Izzard would have won the nomination and defeated carpetbagger Sian Berry in the General Election. My friend in Hove says so.

The selection procedures of the Labour Party are, broadly speaking, not the business of people who do not like the Labour Party.

1. In all parties primaries would lead to unsuitable candidates being selected, and C&WG is a very good example of where that would happen
2. The primary system in the US completely disproves your assertion that they are necessarily "more democratic"

The Tories introduced primaries for some of their seats not realising that those who won the nomination were too independent for the Whips liking. Labour aren't going to repeat that especially under Starmer .

They were well known for being independent minded. That's not exactly the same thing

I highly doubt Shaheen would've had any different outcome with primaries as she had already won a selection vote in the CLP and was removed later on. You are then arguing from that point onwards that Labour should no longer be able to determine which candidates are allowed to stand under its banner - which in order to be sacrosanct up to the stage of nomination would actually require a change in the law to prevent political parties from choosing not to award the certificates that allow one to stand under their banner.
