I can’t work out what possessed him to put that out

Quite refreshing candour, though.

The Tories are capsizing here anyways regardless of who their oarsman is. Still, I think James Cracknell is M1 calibre in every sense and will come back next election.

One wonders why he’s bothered to stick with this. I suppose he may have thought that Sunak would do an effective damage limitation job and that he’d get in as a celebrity. But even that would have had him on the opposition benches. There are loads of more attractive options for someone like him.

My recollection was that Cracknell wanted to be MP for Uxbridge before Boris Johnson got the nomination. Henley is a better fit for him and a seat where I think he'd genuinely make the difference between a Conservative win or a Lib Dem victory. I think Cracknell tried for Henley but didn't get it. Is he just out of shape politically?

He has other irons in the fire, but was sniffing round being a Tory politician long before it all went sour - he was big in the AV referendum (on the "no" side) then stood in the European Parliament elections in 2014. From what I hear, he's alright but has a bit of a sense of entitlement around it and has always felt he should be handed a safe seat. He's clearly a bit annoyed that, now he's found a seat, it's one that he's essentially doomed to lose. But it's ill-disciplined to speak out in the campaign, and I can't see him getting another go in future.

He did a Radio 4 interview a while back and came across as a bit sulky for getting marginal Colchester rather than (apparently) safe Henley. He's not as annoying as Payne and would make a decent MP and Minister one day but he's an insufferable dickhead from what I can make of him. Rowers. Avoid!

Politics can be all about timing. He's had bad timing. He'll become Lord Cracknell, eventually. That's the British way: don't get elected, just get appointed.

Oregon ballot initiative about decriminalising lots of drugs in 2020.

You make it sound like no such thing happens elsewhere. Indeed, it's the best way to exile troublesome rivals and arrange for friends to achieve immunity from prosecution!

Maybe, although there will probably be a VERY long queue of ex-Tory MPs for those appointments, and Cracknell's most recent comments don't exactly look good on his CV for a political gong.

Ted Heath said of the 'Rivers of blood' speech in the 80s that it wasn't without presence. Well the 'Rivers of Shit' speech is 100% true!
