Why don't they but the papers in early tomorrow for their own counter candidate? They are the valid local party. Blair era reforms means that the central parties have a lot more control. They don't just control the Tory logo but the very word "Conservative" on the ballot paper. The central party also has through the data protection laws culminating in GDPR control over the contact data, so any campaign would need to be able to build up the voter database from scratch - something that can be done with some time and motivated volunteers but probably not on this timetable (unless they had loads of people). Even getting the electoral register would take days which wouldn't matter in a long campaign, but would eat up a chunk of the short campaign. Backing Reform is probably the only realistic option open to disgruntled Tories.

This is the first time I've ever heard "Billericay" said aloud, and it is not how I'd imagined it to be pronounced.

He's Dickie for Billericay and he is not doing very well.

I remember that when I first started being interested in elections and politics (1983), I initially assumed it was pronounced “Bill Eric A” but I must have heard it being pronounced “Biller Ricky”way before 1987, because there were local kerfuffles which were being reported prominently at that time.
Similarly, initially I misread “Ruislip” and thought it was “Rooey Slop” But I don’t remember ever thinking that Milngavie was “Milne Gavvy” rather than “Mull Guy”, so I must have heard the name “Mull Guy” very early.

In this interview Richard Holden does come over as a bit of a blockhead.

Does anyone know how well Reform are organised here? This does seem like one of their better prospects all in, but we don't seem to have anyone local to this area on the forum, unless they want to step forward to give a local view.

Labour are lucky that the Boundary Commission cracked Basildon in 2010 to have it in two seats, since Billericay would be a safer blue seat than this for Dick Holden.

The PA are reporting this will be a very early call on election night with the declaration expected at 12.15am.
Could be a very interesting one to see the level of swing in seats such as these.
They say that the only Tory held seats to be called before 1.30am are this seat, Broxbourne and Swindon South.

Just like in 1992 when David Amess won Basildon. However, this seat isn't really typical 'Essex man' because of Billericay - Harlow it ain't. This one might flatter to deceive the Tories vis-a-vis Reform's showing in Essex. The Tories can hold this while still coming third in Essex.

And just like in every election we’ll see how completely pointless lists of predicted result times are. Too many factors in too many seats make gathering a list like this fruitless, yet journalists and twitter commentators will no doubt quote it as though it’s gospel.

Wasn't this part of Essex always an early announcer? I vaguely remember it had that reputation even in the 1980s and it seemed long standing then, particularly as other early announcers tend to be strongly red. But yes a recount could mess up any early results
