This is generally the case - most of Solent's students are from Hampshire or adjacent counties or what I know, whereas the Uni of Soton has a much more geographically diverse student population. However that does not equate to anything like the number of students in a university seat during term time. Same here in Sheffield. The far newer Hallam has associate schools and colleges that generate a local student stream and it is deliberately Sheffield and district friendly. While Sheffield Uni rakes in the Chinese cash, IIRC.

Are you deaf to the benefits of a familial teaching association in a city environment that preferences the needs and aspirations of the local intelligent children? It has always seemed to me to be an excellent model and one that does not cut across excellence or any other part of the agenda! Going for the Chinese money is a distraction and a distortion of all that a good university should be.

Regarding students, it's my understanding that De Montfort University has more locals than Leicester Uni. A bit like Nottingham Trent and Nottingham Uni. This is the constituency in which I live. You're right De Montfort does have a much higher proportion of students from the local area than Leicester. All told there are about 45K students at the two Unis. Not all will live in the city but of those who do the largest number would be in Leicester South which has huge amounts of student accommodation including around the area in which I live.

'Vote for Genocide - Vote Labour [Photo of Ashworth] 'Ceasefire abstainer' What a charming leaflet

'Vote for Genocide - Vote Labour [Photo of Ashworth] 'Ceasefire abstainer' What a charming leaflet Brings back memories of the 2004 by-election and the general election campaign a year later. Labour will take a hit in Spinney Hills and Stoneygate, as well as with the liberal professional vote in Knighton. But short of a total collapse in the inner city wards, Ashworth won't be in trouble - closer than he'd like I suspect.

It's pretty noteworthy that the biggest drop in the labour vote in the PCC Elections was in Leicester at -20% and the greens did very well getting 22% in Leicester. ( Obvious caveats about turnout need to be remembered) We weren't given the data by constituency but it seems reasonable to assume that a lot of that green vote came here. it looks like the independent Shockat Adam is running quite a big campaign and seems to be getting a decent amount of support. I wonder how much the greens are targeting this seat?

Traditionally West has been the safest Labour of the 3 seats in Leicester (when the city has had 3 seats), but hasn't been for a little while now. I suspect that it will resume its place as the safest this time.

However, I believe they are putting their efforts into West - looking at Westcotes, Western Park and Fosse.

Lovely sunny morning here in Leicester South. Ideal voting weather so long as you remember to take your ID with you.

This reminds me of tabloid stories about people missing out on their holiday to Spain/Turkey etc. because their passport was out of date.

I was off to Oman for work and couldn’t board because my passport had around a week short if six months to go. I had to get a new passport and arrive an day or so late.
