The AfD campaign appears to be unraveling. A staffer for Maximilian Krah, the oddball Spitzenkandidat, has been accused of being a Chinese asset, and Petr Bystrom MEP has been accused of taking cash from the Russians. They aren't the only ones. The Belgian PM De Croo has said there are more names to come, and not just from that end of the political spectrum. On a totally unrelated note, an interesting report from a part of the world that you don't see much from. www.politico.eu/article/luxembourg-france-moselle-border-eu-election/ how is De Croo related to this? From what I can tell, he was being asked about the number of Belgian politicians who seem to have been accused of selling out to foreign interests (Russia and China for the right, Qatar and Morocco for the left).

In the case of the German establishment, probably all 4 lol

Euro election posters and placards are suddenly going up in Germany.
Today I saw a giant SPD of Scholz and Barley with platitudes like "Stop a rightwards shift" (might want to consider your role in that, Olaf) and "save jobs" (likewise).
The CDU are running with the even blander "Prosperity needs your voice", the FDP with "Europe. It matters", the AfD with the predictable "our country first". The big Green poster by the motorway was too wordy to be clear, but I've seen another one from the Green Youth demanding to eat the rich, which seems like they've missed who their target electorate are. No sign of Die Linke or BSW so far.
Merz has been on telly a lot in the last week, as has Söder. Wagenknecht is on telly more than the test card!

Any surprise names there andrea? Not so much because of the leaks and speculations of previous weeks. However, they are always useful to check who is in which party at the moment. Mastella's wife is in United States of Europe Alessandra Mussolini is in Forza Italia. Sgarbi is in Brothers of Italy.

I was just looking over the Swedish candidates (listed here:https://data.val.se/euval2024/partier/valsedlar). Only two names jumped out at me. First of all Emma Wiesner, who is top of the Centre Party list. She was third last time around and failed to get in at the time, although she did later become an MEP when one of the other Centre MEPs retired in 2021. She was tipped as a frontrunner to be party leader when Lööf stepped down, but withdrew her candidacy.
The other, bigger, name is Jonas Sjöstedt, who was the former Vänsterpartiet leader and is now at the top of the party list.

In a strange and hamfisted move, the AfD have provoked the fury of Marine Le Pen (and others) by suggesting that France hand Mayotte to the Comoros.
They also hadn't checked where she was at the time. She was ...in Mayotte.

Oh… here was I thinking that the whole point of Mayotte is that Mayotte is in France because it specifically didn’t want to become part of Comoros in the first place. Maybe a random German politician knows better than I do about what the Mayottians want.

A SPD MEP, Matthias Ecke, has been hospitalised after being beaten up whilst putting up posters in Dresden. One teenager has been arrested. The press suspicion is that it was neo-Nazis. A Green activist was assaulted the same day.
Meanwhile, an AfD candidate in Lower Saxony has been assaulted.
There have been a number of such incidents of political figures being harassed or assaulted in recent weeks.

Politico held a Spitzenkandidaten debate a week ago. It's an interesting attempt to become more democratic, but there needs to be more openness, and, especially, more engagement from the European Union public in order to make it relevant.

One-time Dutch D66 MEP and Ultra-Europhile darling Sophie in t'Veld has been refused a position on the Dutch Volt party list and has instead surfaced as lead Volt candidate in Belgium.
It's not long since she was attempting and failing to be made the boss of Renew.

It's not long since she was attempting and failing to be made the boss of Renew. Surely that's old news - Wikipedia says that happened last autumn, and that feels like when I first heard about it. What seems to be the latest news (and that quite possibly a week or so old) is that she has now become co-lead candidate alongside Damian Boeselager of Volt at federal level for the European elections. Goodness knows what that will turn out to mean in practice - I wouldn't have thought that Volt was in a competitive enough position to run one Spitzenkandidat, let alone two of them (presumably as a job share).

Old news but not referenced here previously and probably the most senior politician to ever defect to Volt. Candidatures in Belgium were apparently only approved a few weeks ago so previous manoeuvres, including the attempt to run from NL, were purely speculative. Boeslager will probably have a chance of a seat. In t'Veld has no chance, but probably knows that.
