The media keeps going on about the far-right surge but this primarily happened in the largest 3 nations of the EU: France, Germany and Italy. In Spain and Portugal the ID-grouped parties, Vox and Chega, finished a poor third and only gained 2 seats apiece, and in Scandinavia they made no advance. In Ireland not a single far-right candidate in the European elections there even got enough votes to be able to claim back their election expenses.

Technically, ECR could still gain 2 seats in Ireland…

Even in Germany the AfD arguably performed a bit underwhelmingly compared to expectations, especially since the Euros lend themselves to protest voting.

The narrative in Germany was utterly laughable. The media were acting as if nobody was successful. One state journo asked Merz if 30 per cent for the Union was a failure - he responded that the CDU was the only party to get over 16 per cent, in an election with no threshold.

Some will join some groups. I looked at all of the unassigned/NI parties, and ECR should eventually end up with roughly 92 seats, and ID with roughly 100 seats (If AFD+Revival are eventually going to be allowed back in). I excluded Republic from all of the groups because they are probably too extreme for all of them.

In one of the more surprising moves, it turns out that Spain's new far-right MEP used to live in Leeds and was heavily active in the Young Liberals.
This is a message from your hard-working local Falange team.

This is a message from your hard-working local Falange team. His style of hard right politics is more on the libertarian side rather than the Falange-adjacent style of Vox.

Indeed, but the contrast was too bizarre not to mention!
