In Burton Tories Nathan Binnie and Brian buxton have defected to ukip To be accurate, Nathan Birnie is the East Staffs DC councillor for Weaver ward who left the Tories last month. Brian Buxton is a parish councillor for Stretton parish who was elected for the Popular Alliance in 2011. I find any recent evidence of him having been a Tory.

I have heard a rumour about UKIP recruiting candidates for 2014 in this part of the world; two of the names in the frame are ex-Labour councillors, one of whom was on the hard left and was expelled. If true, it really does seem like they are picking up all sorts of flotsam and jetsam, and that all sorts of characters will be flying under a purple flag of convenience. Well they accepted Pimp!

Firstly I would make the point that Richard Allen is correct and there are people in all political parties 'flying under a flag of convenience' (including, I rather suspect, people a great deal more senior than local councillors!). Secondly I would make the point that libertarianism originates on the left and should not be described as a straightforwardly right wing ideology. I know that not everyone in UKIP is libertarian but I think it would be wrong to call it straightforwardly right wing party either.

I'd guess there are a limited number of MPs under false flags but not necessarily easily recognisable.
In a UKIP context I would assume they need to have a general set of principles as to what they think their cllrs are for (it may already exist, Richard?) and a certain amount of caution as to accepting people with a track record. Obviously they need to be in overall agreement with national policies but a number are going into positions of influence now, what happens if they end up as serious power in Havering next year as a possibility? Havering can't really leave the EU on its own!

Actually, libertarianism originates from utilitarianism, which is, in both its economic and individualistic forms, of the right. Whilst liberalism may be seen through a left-wing spectrum these days, it is only in the sense of individual rights, thus showing its libertarian/utilitarian roots.

Aren't individual rights pretty much anathema to utilitarianism in anything like its philosophical / pure form? Utilitarianism says build a motorway through my house if it will improve journey times - libertarianism and individual rights say that the decision rests with the property owner, right or wrong.

Utilitarianism also says that a thing is only of value if the individual considers it to be so, which is libertarianism as you have described it, in the sense of individual right.

Already happened in Bootle - a former (deselected) Labour councillor has stood twice for them. he used to place himself firmly on the left of the Labour party Former LibDem councillor Jack Colbert has also joined UKIP

Richard in another place has mentioned that Sean Fear has defected to UKIP. I assume he has mentioned it on PB.com where he is a regular though he is an occasional poster of this parish (and a former Hertsmere Tory councillor)

Presumably none of your party's councillors or candidates are standing under a flag of convenience. I won't say that there isn't anybody sailing under a red flag of convenience, but I would like to think that all our elected representatives understand and share our values and policies on at least a basic level. If UKIP want to establish themselves as a serious political force, they need to be a bit more selective about who they admit. Being a repository for washed-up ex-Councillors and protest votes will only get you so far. A 'red flag' of convenience? Just what is left of your party's credibility as anything remotely approaching socialist to even justify your 'red flag' waving these days? The last 'labour' govt was merely a right-wing interlude between far-right Tory governments. When you have representatives ranging from true dedicated socialists like John McDonnell to Blairites there surely has to be a lot of flags of convenience flying because there's nothing in your 'shared values and policies' that would apply across that sort of gap except those that cover elements of all political parties.
