I am sure that there are a great many Jewish, Hindu, and Sikh voters who will not vote for a Muslim candidate of any party. I too consider the declared faith of a candidate. I have a clear preference for None.

The contortions of some Labour politicians/commentators/sources/whatever over these two days are quite impressive. you see my post as a contortion? I lost sleep over this, but it's not a contortion. Perhaps you don't see me as a Labour commentator or source, I don't know. If you think that his outburst was not conclusively antisemitic, it's not a contortion. It may be the wrong conclusion, I don't claim to have a monopoly on political wisdom, but it's not a contortion. It only becomes a contortion if your mindset is something like "it's antisemitic, but it's too much hassle to disown him, so I'll work out a way to defend him".

What a catholic thread. The murder of Brianna Ghey was a violent crime, for which the perpetrators are rightly facing a long sentence. Brianna was by all accounts a lovely person, and as such it is perhaps no huge surprise how impressive Mrs Ghey is. Brianna Ghey was male. Regrettably, many people take offense at this statement of fact. on Ali in Rochdale, Sibboleth made the very pertinent comment that the timing is such that it is really too late for Labour to bin him, and his offence is too egragious for Labour to retain him. Its all a bit Smethwick. Except that he did actually say it.

I wasn't thinking about those on this thread but about some councillors, media commentators, party sources briefing the usual suspects (LabourList, Lee Harper,...). I don't see his "outburst" as somehow "better" than Diane Abbott's and Kate Osamor's idiotic comments which led to their suspensions. However I see some (not all) Labourites who applauded their suspensions now going along the lines of "this one is bad...but...". And the "but" such as one apology is more heartful than others, "he has fallen for a conspiracy theory",...are not particularly convincing. Edit: I was about to make the contortions comment last night but then I fell asleep. So way before your long reasonings.

They say there's new information. What new information? Is there going to be a scoop in the Tuesday front pages?

Patrick Maguire reports this is about to get worse for Labour.
Lessons should be learnt. We all know the baggage practicing Muslim candidates bring.
We’ll still have people pretending this is a one off though.

This is glorious. Where is the prediction thread?
Are there enough decent people in Rochdale for The Green to fluke it?

So that's 2 candidates disowned by their party. What's the record in a constituency election?

Those Rochdale candidates in full:
1. Disowned Labour candidate who voiced conspiracy theory about the current Israel conflict (amongst, apparently, other discretions) 2. Former Labour/Respect MP with a curious relationship with the Arab world, the Islamic faith, and byelections 3. Former Labour MP who sent inappropriate messages to a 17-year old girl 4. A Green candidate with a social media history of dubious opinions about the current Israeli conflict 5. An anti-vaxx conspiracy theorist connected to the far right
You could always vote LibDem.

Now if every other Labour member who agrees with him would like to kindly fuck off and reform Respect then this by-election will have served a truly positive purpose

So no Labour candidate? What a hilarious shambles! Those people who haven’t really been enthusiastic about Labour , but felt rather inclined to vote for someone capable of ‘running a whelk stall’ may need to be reviewing their options!

Prediction thread– vote-2012.proboards.com/thread/18098/rochdale-election-29th-february-2024?page=1I'll edit my prediction at some point but I will wait before doing so– will depend on 1) whether the Lib Dem By-Election Machine decides to wake up after hearing recent news and 2) whether the Labour Party endorses someone else like one of the independents or just stays neutral.

Or our candidate. He's a former Man of Rochdale and a local lad.
