Putin Hold. Others can't win here. Where's the bar chart? It's such a slam dunk that voters don't even need a bar chart to convince them!

This Leonid Slutsky should not be confused with former Hull boss Leonid Slutsky:

Go back to your constituencies and prepare for defenestration! What would Putin's version of Focus be? All the opposition candidates would be described as nazis.

What would Putin's version of Focus be? All the opposition candidates would be described as nazis. Given the limits on who can stand, that would not be entirely inaccurate.

"United Russia, your local choice - and your only choice". A penny on the pound to pay for reeducation.

"United Russia, your local choice - and your only choice". 2012 was the only time that Putin stood as the United Russia candidate. In all other presidential elections he has stood as an Independent and will probably do so this time.

Public opinion in Russia is pretty clear. There is no need for this election and there is no appetite for a campaign that could distract Putin from his important duties. He could easily get away with cancelling the elections but we are talking about a man who is legalistic to a fault.

Nobody is going to be honest about their real opinion in case the person asking is a FSU stooge.

He could easily get away with cancelling the elections but we are talking about a man who is legalistic to a fault. Is it, through? Nobody is going to be honest about their real opinion in case the person asking is a FSU stooge. I have no doubt that his support is not as high as it is claimed. Putin has been faced with situations where he's had to be brazen in his attempts to quash opposition before. This was the case with the saga of Yevgeny Roizman, the anti-corruption liberal and pro-Western former Mayor of Yekaterinburg. Roizman was openly anti-Putin, against corruption, and in favour of democracy. He was also popular, he'd worked on the streets of Yekaterinburg for decades before becoming Mayor tackling drug issues, and he would have been re-elected. So, Putin abolished elections to the mayoralty and instead the Mayor is now appointed by the rigged, rubberstamp city Duma. Putin did that out of weakness, not strength. However, it is a fact that Putin has convinced a large number of older Russians of both his pseudohistorical lies, which is what they are, and that the Jewish ethnic Russian President of Ukraine, who was elected on a platform of soft-Russian friendliness, is a secret genocidally Russophobic neo-Nazi. It's a sad state of affairs, but in a free election Putin would probably win - unless his opponent was Navalny. Navalny has been instrumental in exposing younger, and middle aged below fifty years, Russians the reality of corruption in Russia. This is why he has been disappeared into the Russian prison system, and why I worry Putin or his subordinates would commit the grave crime, and mistake from his point of view, of doing to Navalny what he did to Anna Politkovskaya and his supporters to Boris Nemtsov. It's a genuine concern. Putin hates Navalny, viscerally so, and we have seen how detached from reality Putin can be. However, unless it's a figure like Navalny, and there is really only Navalny who can be broad in his appeal, being a Russian nationalist and a pro-Western democrat, Putin would win.
