The really funny part is that Jordan called the vote himself in attempt to demonstrate that he still had the support of the vast majority of the conference. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to laugh.

Given that Jeffries keeps winning maybe they should just give the Speakership to him There is actually one precedent, in 1855, for the House to agree to elect on a plurality. They agreed this only after failing in 132 ballots to elect a speaker with an outright majority. Also 1849 when after 62 failed ballots the House narrowly agreed to elect on a plurality.

Kevin Hern? Another hard right election-denier. Have the GOP got no rational people left? I wonder by how much this list will change by Tuesday… There appear to be more running than just these 6, with the vast majority being absolute nobodies. It reminds me of a more extreme version of the 2019 Tory leadership contest, where you had people who even political nerds had never heard of like Mark Harper and Kit Malthouse running - but in this case, all the candidates are at that level.

John Boehner - divorced Eric Cantor - beheaded Paul Ryan - died Kevin McCarthy - divorced Jim Jordan - beheaded
This will have consequences for the Republicans, who hope to win unified control in Virginia next month. It’s quite possible these shenanigans cost Republicans one or both chambers of the Virginia state legislature and they may impact Republicans’ chances in Kentucky, although Andy Beshear seems to have that governor election locked down.

Kentucky polls are notoriously bad (tend to overstate Dem support by more than 10%) and the GOP performed better than expected in Louisiana despite the House GOP chaos. But I do suspect that it is going to hurt the GOP in VA because of its proximity to DC.

The thing is an absolutely nobody is probably the only way they can get to 217. They need some fairly new, inoffensive backbench member who has never done anything worthy of making enemies.

Speak for yourself. A better response would've been, to quote Dave Wasserman, "I've seen enough". The reference to the wives of Henry VIII perfectly sums up the Republican Party's troubles, IMO. As with the crisis in the Middle East, what happens next here depends in large part on what Jordan decides to do.

I reckon the House GOP conference nominates Emmer. As House Majority Whip he seems the most serious candidate. I'm not sure he's an election denier either. Zeldin, as Republican Congressional Campaign Committee Chair could be good for fundraising purposes, but might it distract him from the day of raising money?

Behind closed doors, I suspect the House GOP conference nominates House Majority Whip, Tom Emmer rather than Kevin Hern. I see the former as more likely to get to 217.

I will do this again if/when we get a Speaker, FYI. It IS funny how the GOP have gone through so many leaders in the House. They remind me of Scottish Labour. Also, I made this thread. I’ll post the meme if I want to. Sorry not sorry.

There are currently nine declared candidates: House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.), Republican Conference Vice Chair Mike Johnson (La.), Republican Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern (Okla.), Reps. Byron Donalds (Fla.), Austin Scott (Ga.), Jack Bergman (Mich.), Pete Sessions (Tex.), Gary Palmer (Ala.) and Dan Meuser (Pa.).

An interesting analysis of all the Speaker candidates here ahead of tonight’s House GOP conference nominating vote: Hern is the furthest right of the nine candidates, with Emmer ideologically similar to McCarthy. I think, given the numbers last week and before, that the Republicans will put forward Emmer. For Emmer to win, he needs to rebuild McCarthy's coalition from the 15th round of voting in January. Can he do that? To do so, he probably needs to offer big concessions to the Freedom Caucus and possibly plum Committee positions - the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
