The GOP House Conference will hold a meeting at 18:00 BST. It is rumoured that they will hold a vote on whether Jordan should remain the nominee.

Stories floating around that the anti-Jordan Republicans are rather more organised than the rest: they have apparently been rationing how many actually vote against Jordan, and are planning to switch a few more each vote so that opposition is seen to be growing. Such fun. Looks like this is true. What a joke. Hakeem Jeffries now has more total votes for Speaker than any other candidate in history (it was before this ote, but I'm not sure which one it was on) They thought that the Trump-lite bullying and shoving around technique would work but clearly Jordan isn't Trump.

It's even more significant than that. He's tied the smallest number of votes for a majority party nominee since the House was fixed at 435 members. The previous 194 was 1923. There's already one person who's voted Jordan thrice who's said he's voting Trump next time, so a record low approaches if he doesn't knock it on the head.

Watching the Republican Party act like this feels more television than reality. I read a blog today about the threats from Republicans to the wives of members who were going to vote against Jordan, and credible death threats made against the opposition to Jordan. They've been eating their own since nominating Trump and now they've gone past the dessert course and coffees I've no idea what they've got left to destroy. The way they keep breaking into choreographed applause doesn't make it feel like a serious exercise.

It's certainly not a serious country.

I don’t think you can really be certain how this will influence the Presidential and Senate elections next year if at all but the Democrat House campaign really does write itself doesn’t it?

The House GOP Conference has voted to 112-86 to remove Jim Jordan as their nominee for Speaker.
EDIT: They have scheduled a vote for next Tuesday to select a new nominee. Kevin Hern has announced that he will run.

What the House GOP Conference has given, it has now taken away. Jim Jordan no longer the official nominee for Speaker.

The really funny part is that Jordan called the vote himself in attempt to demonstrate that he still had the support of the vast majority of the conference.

Given that Jeffries keeps winning maybe they should just give the Speakership to him

Given that Jeffries keeps winning maybe they should just give the Speakership to him There is actually one precedent, in 1855, for the House to agree to elect on a plurality. They agreed this only after failing in 132 ballots to elect a speaker with an outright majority.
