I cant ever recall a party spending that much on a by-election in a safe seat? Do the resident stats experts have the answer?

It's not a conclusive answer about which party spent the most for a by-election in a safe seat, but recent high spendings I recall/can find figures are: Labour spending £81,688 in South Shields and Conservatives spending £98,016.82 in Henley (the LibDems spent 95,237.36 to come 10,000 votes behind). I wouldn't be surprised if Labour (and LD) spent close to the limit in Brent East 2003 and Hartlepool, Hodge Hill, Leicester South 2004 given than the previously safe seats turned out knife edge marginals.

The SNP certainly seem to have thrown the kitchen sink at it. That's a huge wodge of cash more than Labour.... Although I do suppose they probably have it to burn at the moment.

Well, one rumour I heard was that a lot of the SNP activists were put up in hotels in Aberdeen for the weekends when they came up from the Central Belt. That would certianly increase the expenses... if it was included...

The most depressing things in that article are the three quotes from party spokespersons at the end.
UKIP: 'Our candidate won some votes and that is the real story'. Labour: 'The SNP spend more than we did so the SNP was obviously running scared'. SNP: 'Labour spent less than we did so Labour is obviously struggling for cash'.
Sometimes, I really hate party politics....

My understanding certainly is that the SNP currently has more money than it knows what to do with, so the high spend isn't really that unusual.

That mostly seems to be down to their aim to emulate the Yes to Fairer Votes Campaign......
