Labour selection is today. Contenders are Cllr Mete Coban Cllr Caroline Woodley
Edit: actually, the result will be declared tomorrow as they vote online after today's hustings.

Might Diane Abbott contest this as an independent or endorse a non-Labour candidate? It would be risky of course to do either. IIRC she ran for London Mayor once.

Yes she could but to do so would end her time as a Lab MP permanently. Which would seem odd as she is effectively calling for her readmission in the past 10 days.

Yes I guess it depends how final her suspension is and what she does next. I think Diane and Corbyn may just retire rather than stand again.

It is well known, even if not officially admitted, that Abbott's health is not great and hasn't been for a while.
Standing in this election really isn't a good idea for her.

Also I don't get the sense that Diane Abbott is particularly politically concerned about local government in Hackney. She wasn't very interested in local government even when she was a councillor in Westminster.

She is 70 years old in a few days. I thought it would have been better to use this occasion to announce her retirement. With some general digs at Starmer if she pleases her.

The Greens have a crowdfunded a mammoth £390 for this contest! www.hackneygreens.org.uk/2023_mayor_byelection_crowdfunder. The average donor gave £39. I think I might do a bit of campaigning for them since I'm voting for them - can someone please explain what phonebanking is? This is a long-shot, but you never know!

Most political parties or campaign organisations have an online system you use it'll call you and connect you to voters.

Phone Banking was a means of conducting one's banking from home/office by use of dial numbers, codes and speaking to people. It was a halfway house to online banking which has all but completely superceded it. Political-phone-banking is a borrowing of the phrase and a rather confusing use of words. In effect it is lazy canvassing by telephone instead of in the field at the door. Compile lists of numbers, train operatives, start phoning and employ a script. It is intrusive and abstract and modernist in every way. It is designed for people like you who would hate to get wet and footsore, or to meet real human beings and their dogs and lifestyles. But you could have looked that up or guessed couldn't you? You phone up people, using a script, and solicit their vote, and if convinced they are sincere in their response, you bank that vote in the vote chest towards the target the party feels is necessary for a win. It is all part and parcel of modernism. Do it indoors. Do not interface with people. Do not interfaace with reality. Do not not take any personal risks. Take the easy course. Use a screen or other tech. Virtual reality politics for the fainthearted wimp.

I am noted for my preparedness to do a very wide variety of tasks in helping my party win elections, but I always avoid phone canvassing. I greatly prefer seeing people in person. Although I do like holding the board which means I talk mainly to the rest of my team of canvassers. Often someone else is holding the board, or there isn't a boardholder, however, and then I'm happy knocking on doors myself. I've done phone canvassing in the past & don't enjoy it.

Phone canvassing is useful when there's only a short amount of time left for campaigning and the weather is too awful to canvas in person; or where you've got people from outside the area who want to help but can't travel down. However, I personally absolutely hate it and would rather do just about any other form of campaigning.

Phone canvassing is good and has a place. I've done it when the weather has been crap usually. 2012 PCCs, various by elections, 2019 general election, etc. Throughout COVID as well. I too don't like phone canvassing. Really did have to get over that when I stood as a candidate and we phone canvassed throughout December.
I got a part time job working for L4ND earlier this year phone banking. I didn't mind that tbf
