Both this and the Spelthorne vacancy on Wednesday had incumbents resigning soon after being elected for sketchy reasons. That can often irritate some voters. no, the Labour councillor died in Broadland. Though not according to andrewteale's preview?

Control of the council is an ongoing pattern in the results. All of the Conservative gains since May have been in councils that they don’t control. Of their last 8 defences, all of which have been lost, only 1( Plymstock) has been in a council that they don’t control. There are very few gains by any party where they already control the council. Looking at my list since May I think there have been 24 gains by all parties and I think only 1 ( Plymstock) has been a gain by a party that already has control. Castle Cary? Yes I’d forgotten that was a gain! 2.

Yep, I got that from carolus' list on thread of upcoming by-elections, which is usually very accurate, so don't know what happened in this case. I tend to only dig around where he hasn't managed to identify the reason, because I'm basically a lazy sod

I have mentioned the Worfield result to someone who grew up in Bridgnorth and still knows all of the South Eastern part of Shropshire very well. The immediate reaction was to ask whether there had been some kind of counting error.

But its not the first time either that happened for a LD by-election win from nowhere. Memories of one in Bridlington.
