One of our newly-elected councillors managed to nominate themselves for Leader by mistake, at the first meeting of the Labour Group. They very quickly made it clear it had been an accidental misreading of the form.

I'm not entirely sure that the Israel/Gaza situation is the real reason why she isn't a Labour member any more. Though I'm sure you know that... ;-)

Anybody on here know what’s happened to the Wakefield & District independents? There has been nothing on their Facebook page since the last elections and I have noticed that John Thomas who stood in Altofts and Whitwood last year, is the Reform UK candidate for the next GE in Pontefract,Castleford and Knottingley assuming it’s the same person of course.

Many groups (of all parties) are relaxed about councillors voting against developments in their wards when they know it's unpopular, but everyone else votes for it because it is in the public interest. Obviously not this one. It only becomes an issue when the majority is threatened, when the dissident is expected to suck it up.

Not sure Labour’s majority in Wakefield is going to be threatened any time soon.

Just got our Business rates demand from Wakefield Council. a 100% increase from last year. Just a reminder to everyone that Non-Domestic Rates are a national system. Properties are given Rateable Values by the Valuation Office Agency which is a UK government institution. The Secretary of State sets the multiplier that tells the owners of each hereditament what they must pay. The local authority merely sends out the bills and collects the money, which is then redistributed to other councils. Lots of people seem to think I control the £2bn in NNDR collected by Westminster ... sadly not so.

I have been informed that Independent councillors Homewood (Ossett) and Massey ( Ackworth, North Elmsall and Upton) won't be standing for re-election in May.

When the all outs take place I wish the local Tory party managers the best of luck trying to fill all the spaces for candidates... Five years ago when Leeds had them, the chap stood himself, as did his wife... and there was at least one candidate from outside the city that was identified as working there, so were rounded up and put on the ballot paper. The district could easily be a Tory free zone in a couple of years. Down from nearly 20 three years ago. It could well be. It won't take long for Labour to piss people off.
