Andrew Cooper picked as Conservative candidate c.40, Tamworth councillor since 2021; assurance engineer with Network Rail since 2007; served with Staffordshire Regiment, 2001-07, went from sniper to lance corporal; did tours to Iraq, Kenya & Kosovo. Pretty good CV as with the Uxbridge by election looks like the candidate might be decent. Most definitely - but they don’t have the ULEZ card in this neck of the woods.

Yes because I think there’s been a realignment plus you could argue the Tories did so abysmally in this neck of the woods for so long because of the South East Staffordshire drubbing in 1996. That, plus demographic change.

That, plus demographic change. It is unclear whether the Brexit/Corbyn/Johnson related realignment has now been reversed. I would not expect the 1996 by election to be having much effect as late as 2005.

The Green Party candidate for this by-election is Sue Howarth: Why is the picture Tory activists? Where are the Greens? Because the picture comes from the ITV article which the Green party tweet (are they still called tweets post-rebranding?) links to. If you follow the link through there is also a picture of the Green candidate, but I agree it's a bit messy the way it appears...
