I wonder-how many Labour Party members have the first name Keir (which was not even Keir Hardie's actual first name; he was in full James Keir Hardie).

Since there is no prediction thread, I wish to make an early prediction here. Labour 1st Tories 2nd Yorks Party in close third (definitely at least 20 percent). Would expect a narrow majority for Labour of around 1k in a by election. The Yorks Party have a chance of coming 3rd for the following reasons - they have a strong and well known local candidate, they can act as a regionalist repository for those dissatisfied with national politics and their image is quite inoffensive and amenable for prospective voters. Having lived a large chunk of my life in this constituency, I can assure you that he won't be considered particularly local by most of the electorate. Also, 20% seems remarkably high and, I would assume, only achievable on a very low turnout with Yorkshire Party-orientated voters remarkably enthused. I agree on the potential Labour majority. I don't see the Yorkshire Party getting double digits - saving their deposit would be a reasonable result for them. Labour will take it, I think... not by much. Unless the Tory vote in the more Harrogate parts goes yellow...

Somebody enquired how many Keirs have ever been elected outside the UK Labour party - the answer may be just one Canadian Liberal in Prince Edward Island.

The only other example I found was Colin Keir, one term SNP MSP for Edinburgh Western 2011-16.

I know a Keir who defected from Labour to the Lib Dems in the run-up to the 2019 election.

Not saying it is related - but there was some internal Tory disquiet about the selection as related by Davıd Boothroyd above?

One can only hope this is not as serious as it sounds…

Nevertheless a new chance for Andrew Lee to be selected will probably help encourage the local association.

A councillor named Keir Chewings has been elected for the Rushcliffe Independents representing Cotgrave last month.

Please don't speculate or make assumptions. If it is a genuine family issue I’m sure everyone will wish him & the family all the best. However there is chat around the selection procedure, and he has removed himself from social media… which is bound to set the rumour mill into overdrive.

Looking at his Twitter, he wears clothing with a giant Labour rose enbroidered on it and keeps retweeting Corbyn and Jamie Driscoll. I assumed the Rushcliffe Independents were a Condependent party, not left of Labour.

There's a conservative Keir on West Sussex who must be a great disappointment to his parents!
