You're right - somehow I'd convinced myself that he lost in 2015.

I don’t think there was ever any real suggestion that the Greens wouldn’t stand, but confirmation that they are standing: There was a fair amount of cynicism from Labour tweeters that they would, but maybe that is to be expected.

The fact that it's taken them this long to confirm makes it fairly clear that they're not going to run a meaningful campaign. In that context, the question of whether they wanted to throw away £500 wasn't an entirely baseless one.

This will make no difference to the result. Alex Salmond has the sheer audacity to claim that the SNP should stand aside any candidates for Alba, which has only 2 MPs, no MSPs, no councillors and did not poll above 2.3% in any region in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election; Alba's bargaining position is in reality practically zero.

To be fair the Kirkcaldy guy would be a nice enough guy if he hadn't got into politics

By-election date expected to be confirmed today-likely to be 5th October 2023.
Already 10 candidates have declared their intention to run-the current record for highest number of candidates in a parliamentary by-election in Scotland is 13 (Glasgow North East, 2009). I believe that Scottish record will be at least matched in this by-election.
By comparison the records for highest number of candidates in a Welsh parliamentary by-election and in a Northern Irish parliamentary by-election both stand at a mere 11.

Something nice for dinner I hope!

it was nice, and it was intended for dinner - Chicken Normandy, with apples, cider & creme fraiche - but my wife didn't fancy a creamy dish for dinner so we went for a Chinese meal in the Finchley Road in basic surroundings (we had cause to be in the Hampstead area). It wasn't bad actually. No doubt we will have the chicken tomorrow, or else it will go in the freezer.

My wife doesn't always enjoy the best of health & sometimes meal plans have to be changed for this reason.

My guess for this by-election is
LAB 52% (+17.5) SNP 33% (-11) CON 6% (-9) LIB 4% (-1) GRN 3% (new) RFM 0.7% (new) SFP 0.5% (new) ISP 0.4% (new) SSP 0.2% (new) Volt 0.1% (new) TUSC 0.1% (new)
It'll probably be framed as a better-than-expected result for Labour and terrible for SNP and Conservatives.
