Time to (finally) give this its own thread, I think.

If the official notice from the Speaker is received tomorrow, that would mean the petition would run from Wed 21st June - Tue 1st August.

Can writs for by-elections caused by recall petitions be moved in a recess?

Given the dates, it's looking likely it'll be a mid to late October by-election.

This constituency has given me my biggest ever percentage win on a bet (trivial in monetary terms though) when I got I think 18/1 on a Labour gain in 2017. I don't suppose the odds will be so generous this time..

This recall petition should easily cross the 10% threshold given the circumstances-Scotland was much more supportive of COVID-19 restrictions than England.

I don’t bet, but that was one of a handful of occasions I’ve wished that I did.

If I remember correctly, wasn't Michael Martin very generous odds to succeed Betty Boothroyd as Speaker and some people made a decent chunk of money?

Was this because everyone thought a Conservative like Haselhurst or Sir George Young was going to win or because they expected a Labour outsider to win the election.

Seven signing places, which is quite a lot for what is a mostly urban constituency. Three in Rutherglen, one in Cambuslang in the outer Glasgow suburbia bit. One in Blantyre and two in Hamilton (which both appear to be just outside the constituency).

Almost entirely irrelevant, but I've always thought the naming of the "Recall of MPs Act" was rather sloppy for using an initialism in its official title. Are there any other examples of this?

No doubt Margaret Ferrier is hoping that with the statutory period for signing the recall petition being between 20 June and 31 July, enough of her constituents will be on holiday such that the 10% threshold will not be passed. Not a chance!

For a bit of personal trivia, I was born in this seat although I’ve never lived in it. There was a dedicated maternity hospital in Rutherglen and a lot of expectant mothers in South Lanarkshire as well as the Southside area of Glasgow were sent there including mine
It is now long closed

Closing that was an appalling act of cultural vandalism as well as an inconvenience for a lot people
