That seems a fairly reasonable prediction at this stage. I would guess a slightly better performance for the LDs, maybe getting third place.

When is the SOPN for this by-election going to be released? Nominations have now closed but the election timetable on South Lanarkshire Council's website does not indicate when the SOPN will be released.

"Prince Ankit Love Emperor of India (no description)" Oh yeah, this is what we're after. When he stood in Richmond Park in 2016 he was merely claiming to be the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir.

Possible twitter feeds for the Independent/no description candidates: Garry Patrick Cooke (nb his tweets are mostly in Gaelic) Andrew V Daly(neither mentions the by-election, though, so these identifications might be off)

I would like to see it made a legal necessity to use your full given name as on the birth certificate and for any deviation for marriage to be proved by documentation that is fully followed up and verified. No dropping of names, altering of names or adding to names for any reason. No short version or nick name or 'Known As' names. And no alteration by deed poll unless more than two years prior to the election. And certainly no titles or daft emphemera of this nature. Make it a criminal offence to do any of those things plus the voidance of the election in the event of them winning.

That Monty Python sketch has left us with a terrible legacy of candidates taking the mickey out of our democratic system with their narcissistic, ridiculous, contorted changes of name.

However, for every Prince Ankit Love Emperor of India, there's a Timothy who everyone knows as Tim, an Elizabeth who everyone calls Liz, a Michael better known as Mike. That is what "commonly known as" was intended for, and that's quite reasonable. As is leaving out middle names if you wish. This can actually make it easier to know who it is that's standing.

I wouldn’t be as strict as carlton43, but the use of “known as” names has increased a lot in recent years, and has been abused with nonsensical descriptions. I think that individual candidates are doing it as a substitute for using a party name (there has been a corresponding increase in “Independent” or no-description candidates). I suspect that this is essentially because self-important weirdos are not organised enough to be able to register their parties properly, thereby properly registering a party name. In other words, they can’t find a second person willing to be the party’s other registered officer.

They could handle the registration, do the accounts, leaving the self-important weirdos free to do what they do best, presumably showing up to counts in strange outfits.

Find it hard to get too bothered about this tbh, some of these people are irritating nuisances but others are genuinely inspired (Lord Buckethead for example)

In what way is Lord Buckethead 'inspired' or any less of a slightly tedious distraction than other candidates of the type? The candidate who has stood under that name at the last couple of elections totally nicked the 'character' from one from 30 years ago and all of these types are ultimately inspired by Lord Sutch. Its all pretty old and unfunny now - even our resident loony seems to think so.

Well, maybe. I still find it difficult to get exercised about, compared to certain other abuses of our election culture.

I do think that Mary Elizabeth Truss, say, should be allowed to stand under the name by which she really is commonly known, though.
