We evidently need a guard to stop this thread from going off the rails.

Any further news about who will stand in this by-election (apart from candidates we already know about)?

This is just not on. This thread is supposed to be a gauge of what is likely to happen in Rutherglen & Hamilton West. the contents is sometimes too narrow, sometimes too broad and nobody is russian to standardise it

"The Scottish Liberal Democrats have announced their candidate in the forthcoming Rutherglen and Hamilton West byelection.
Gloria Adebo, who works as a data analyst, will run for the party in the vote triggered by the successful recall petition for Margaret Ferrier.
While a date for the byelection has not been set yet, it will be keenly contested by the SNP and Labour.
Adebo, who lives in Rutherglen with her family and previously stood as a council candidate, started her campaign by calling for more help for people struggling to pay their mortgages.
She said:
The Rutherglen and Hamilton West byelection is a real chance for local people to deliver a judgment on the difficulties and disasters we have been landed in by incompetent, populist governments in London and Edinburgh.

Didn't they hold up (relatively) well during the coalition years in the Scottish parliament by polling around six percent in Hamilton, or am I misremembering? Edit: nevermind, it was Rutherglen in 2016 when the Lib Dems held their deposit.

The last parliamentary by-election in Hamilton, of course, saw 5 candidates hold their deposit and the Lib Dems come 6th.

It was in this seat, in Cambuslang, that I saw a man take off his shirt in preparation for a fight in the street.

It was outside the Wetherspoons. To be honest, I'd have felt cheated if I'd visited the area and hadn't got to see a man take off his shirt for a fight.

I don’t think there was ever any real suggestion that the Greens wouldn’t stand, but confirmation that they are standing:

I was thinking there that the last Scottish Westminster by-election had been Inverclyde 2011 which would be quite a gap, then remembered Airdrie and Shotts 2021. But even with that it does feel like there’s been a lack of them relative to previous times

But even with that it does feel like there’s been a lack of them relative to previous times I remember waiting ages for a parliamentary by-election in Scotland after I started following them in 1983. During the 1983-1987 parliament, there were 2 by-elections in Wales (Cynon Valley 1984 and Brecon & Radnor 1985), but there were none in Scotland until Glasgow Govan 1988. When it came, it was fun because it was an SNP gain starting from 4th place.

Airdrie and Shotts is one of several by elections this parliament which it is likely may change hands at the next general election from the by election winning party.
Hartlepool, Uxbridge, Selby and any of the seats the Lib Dems gained potentially being on this list.

It does appear that Danny Beales is hoping to give Uxbridge & South Ruislip another go. He's been out co-ordinating campaigns & campaigning himself.

Hartlepool, Uxbridge, Selby and any of the seats the Lib Dems gained potentially being on this list. Not uncommon. I believe that every by-election in the 2010-2015 parliament that saw a change of winning party had it change back at the next general election. Plus Inverclyde and Eastleigh.

Not Clacton. That was won by Douglas Carswell as a Conservative in 2010, he then won the by-election as UKIP, and held it in the general election also as UKIP.
