Anna Lawton is also a member of the Jewish Labour Movement & the JLM are working actively to secure her election (though they are generally electorally active in many areas, not least Uxbridge & S Ruislip)

Mr Teale makes an interesting point in this paragraph (my emphasis):

Hodgson’s loss can be put down mostly to a government amendment moved at committee stage of the bill which became the Elections Act 2022. The effect of this amendment was to change the electoral system for elected mayors, and for police and crime commissioners, to first-past-the-post and to remove the Supplementary Vote system which had previously been used. It is important to note that this electoral system change is not a reversion to previous practice: all elected mayor elections had previously used SV, and the Conservative-led coalition government legislated for the use of SV when it set up elected police and crime commissioners just over a decade ago. The precedent is clear: should a future government wish to change the electoral system for local government or for parliament, a referendum will not be necessary.

Andrew alludes to a Lib Dem winning a ward in which he claimed to have been a paper candidate whereas in reality he clearly had an excellent chance of winning. I have an acquaintance who claimed to have stood in a past Hounslow Council election for the Conservatives having been told he wasn't likely to win - in Turnham Green ward which is very rarely lost by the Conservatives! (He did indeed win & served one term.) I'm not sure he's being totally honest about this. I suspect quite a few others have claimed to be standing as paper candidates and then won when they in reality probably stood a fairly decent chance.

One of Stoke’s Conservative councillors was a member when I first became politically active in the early 1980’s, lost his seat when we became a unitary authority and won every seat, disappeared for about a decade before appearing as a candidate in his home Ward, won, told my mum at the count his wife was going to kill him as he was only intended to be a paper candidate, but that was patently nonsense as he’s just been re-elected for a third term and has also become Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group.

That must have been a long time ago? Turnham Green Tory Cllrs generally serve a few terms.
