That is a much worse result for Labour than having won 1/2 (or is it 2/3?) seats in the ward at the regular election would have been 1/3. Labour won 2 out of 3 irl. The ward now has one Labour, one Tory and one Green councillor.

Looking back at Sherborne West, I can see by hindsight that was a more difficult hold than originally it appeared. Then I think back to when I knew that area very well indeed as a child and I cannot conceive how it could ever be anything but Tory. Then, thinking about the Haringey ward which I knew equally well in my late teens ( Eileen worked at St Anne's hospital for a while) it would be difficult to imagine it anything but Labour. And of course it still is. Presumably the reason for the election in Sherborne ( sitting councillor had moved to Devon and been elected there) might have been a factor in a slightly poor result for the Lib Dems. I wonder if his apparent lie about being a paper candidate in Exmouth was spotted or noticed by anyone in Sherborne- I doubt it. Sherbourne has also traditionally been a bit of an oddity as well with the Lib Dems being generally more competitive in more rural areas outside the town, rather than in the town itself. That only really began to change in the last decade (when the resigning councillor secured a seat in 2015).

The pattern in those two London by-elections is pretty similar to some other recent London by-elections and no real surprise - areas where the Greens were in a distant second, but in those particular wards there was either a lack of strength or a lack of effort whilst the Lib Dems are able to produce a better campaign and result. It will be interesting to see what happens in Newham, where there maybe isn't the same Lib Dem residual strength and the Greens seem to be actively working at least one of the wards. I don't know why the Greens are so active in Newham, outside of Stratford, where boundary changes created a seat they could win, it should be a demographic desert for them,l

They mostly target areas where they think there's a vulnerability, not areas with their strongest general election demographics.

It's also telling that people think they're voting for very different things by voting Green at local compared to parliamentary level. They won control of Mid Suffolk DC but will not come close to winning a parliamentary seat in the area because the two offerings are fundamentally different and one is much, much further from what the area's electorate want
