I'm not sure whether Rosemary Brownlow would have been kept as the Alliance candidate had a by-election happened, but she's moved considerably to the right since her days in the SDP. I assume the Lib Dems would have lost it anyway in 1997 though. Quite possibly in 1992, even. John Ryman has to be up there in the "worst MPs" stakes, for all sorts of reasons.

Bassetlaw, 2019 would Labour of won if the parachuted candidate in the GE was not the candidate.

Funnily enough had there been a Bassetlaw byelection in late 2019, Labour *might* have held on with the right candidate - not least because you could reasonably expect a major BxP effort in those circumstances. The real pro-Tory "Brexit wave" only came once the GE was called, and yes the Tories would have won the seat then regardless.

Which is pretty much how they held the heavily brexit Peterborough in that by-election

North West Leicestershire 2009. The Labour incumbent, David Taylor, died suddenly over Christmas 2009 and the by-election was held over until the 2010 General Election - which strikes me as a very long time for a seat to go without an MP?

It happened pre-1997 as well (Iain Mills and Martin Redmond died at the start of the year)
I suppose if you *know* there is going to be a GE by the middle of the year because the law demands one, it does make things slightly different.
