Come back, Middle Englander, all is forgiven.
The final count appears to be 37 by-elections on 4 May 2023, 18 single seat contests and 19 “double” elections (32 arising from resignation and 5 caused by the death of the sitting councillor).
In comparison there were 39 by-elections in English seats on 2 May 2019 = 14 single seats and 25 “double” elections. On 7 May 2015 (which was also General Election Day), there were 75 by-elections in English seats – 43 single seats and 32 “double elections”.
The R indicates the vacancy arose as a result of a resignation and D following a death.
