The Conservative candidate is a sitting councillor for Drayton & Farlington on Portsmouth City Council (not up this year) which is adjacent to this division and is also their candidate for Purbrook on the ordinary Havant Borough election on the same day. His wife is standing in Drayton & Farlington this May having lost her seat in Cosham to Labour last year.

DURHAM UA, Chester-le-Street East Candidates: BAINBRIDGE, Allan (Conservative) HASWELL, Russell Amor (Liberal Democrat) SCURFIELD, Julie Anne (Labour) 2021: Con 552, Lab 411, Grn 300, LD 67 Julie Scurfield (Lab) was the runner-up here last time. Allan Bainbridge was formerly the Conservative councillor in Chester Le Street South. He was elected in 2008 after 4 previous failed attempts to get elected (2 in the ward, 2 elsewhere), lost his seat in 2013, gained it back in 2017, then lost it again in 2021. Chester Le Street East is one of the most Conservative wards in Durham, but I wouldn’t fancy his chances to get back on the council in the current circumstances.

If both of them are elected to all those seats, by a rough calculation, they would receive £43,470 a year in basic allowances between them.

Kent County Council Sheppey by-election candidates - 4 May 2023 -Peter Apps (Labour) -Linda Brinklow (Liberal Democrats) -Elliott Jayes (Swale Independents Putting Sheppey First) -Mike Whiting (Conservative) This will be the third different KCC Division Whiting has fought (that I know of) and if he's fighting a Swale Ward too, that'll be about the 7th different one he's stood in... Just where will he stand next? That's just a bit on the harsh side, Pimp. I do hope you're not still smarting from when Mike beat you by 119 votes for the Swale West County seat in 2017? Mike's been an activist for 25 years but his employment effectively stopped him from standing for election for many years. He has won most of the elections where he's been a candidate. And it's not unusual for candidates not expecting to win election to switch wards. And activists can often fight wards or Divisions when a party vacancy happens to occur there. For the record: in 2008 he stood for us in Roman Ward (SBC) in 2009 he was elected to CCC for the Swale Central Division (which included SBC Roman Ward) in 2011 he stood for us in West Downs (SBC) in 2012 he was elected to SBC for Kemsley Ward in a by-election (which was part of the Swale Central Division that he represented at the time on CCC) in 2013 he unsuccessfully defended his CCC Swale Central Division in 2015 he was elected to SBC in Teynham & Lynsted Ward in 2017 he was elected to CCC in Swale West (part of which he'd previously contested for the Borough elections) in 2019 he successfully defended his SBC seat in Teynham & Lynsted Ward in 2021, as you are well aware, he failed to successfully defend his County seat in Swale West when you were elected. All in all, not really the record of a random carpetbagger, surely? With his move from the mainland to the Island, contesting Sheppey in the current CCC by-election, it's perfectly reasonable, rather than defending his SBC Teynham & Lynsted seat, that Mike is fighting in Queenborough & Halfway Ward for SBC, as it's part of the Division he's contesting on the same day. In fact, had he decided to defend Teynham & Lynsted Ward on May 4th, you'd have been criticising him for contesting a mainland seat and an Island Division on the same day. So, a bit of a cheap shot against Mike, I feel.

In fact, had he decided to defend Teynham & Lynsted Ward on May 4th, you'd have been criticising him for contesting a mainland seat and an Island Division on the same day. So, a bit of a cheap shot against Mike, I feel. Hardly smarting given the 2021 result... Let's look at that record from a slightly different viewpoint: in 2008 he stood in Roman Ward (SBC) - and lost in 2009 he was elected to KCC for the Swale Central Division (which included SBC Roman Ward) in 2011 he stood for us in West Downs (SBC) - rather than the seat he fought in 2008 and which wasn't part of his Swale Central division but part of Swale west - and he lost - in 2012 he was elected to SBC for Kemsley Ward in a by-election (which was part of the Swale Central Division that he represented at the time on KCC) - so he took an opportunity that became available - third different ward in 4 years. Result notable at the time for the huge collapse in Tory support and the remarkable UKIP vote. in 2013 he unsuccessfully defended his CCC Swale Central Division in 2015 he was elected to SBC in Teynham & Lynsted Ward - deciding not to defend his seat in Kemsley won just 3 years earlier. And not in a County Ward he was representing either. 4th different ward contested in 7 years in 2017 he was elected to KCC in Swale West (part of which he'd previously contested for the Borough elections) - ah yes, a different County division to his previous one where he'd lost and, contrary to your claim, not one where he had even sought election let alone represented on Swale. in 2019 he successfully defended his SBC seat in Teynham & Lynsted Ward - As far as I can work out, this is the only time he has successfully fought and defended a seat - by 5 votes. in 2021, as you are well aware, he failed to successfully defend his County seat in Swale West when you were elected. in 2023 seeks election to KCC in a Byelection and goes for the far easier seat of Queenborough rather than defend Teynham. 3rd different County division and 5th different Borough Ward in 15 years. Hard to see a continued commitment to any specific locale there whatsoever. You say "He has won most of the elections where he's been a candidate." - yes he has won 5 out of 9 - and lost 4 out of 9. Which is better than my record of won 4 out of 9. But that's hardly relevant to the point is it... Because mine were all in the same area and I fought on despite losing.

That’s not a ward that should be be voting Labour in a landslide. They barely won it even in 2013 and benefitted from a large UKIP vote.

Progressive alliance? The Green vote seems to have been pretty personal in that ward, so I doubt it would have gone overwhelmingly Labour back in 2021 (it’s historically one of the Conservative’s strongest wards in Durham, and it’s hardly going to have been trending Labour the past decade.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was moving left relative to other wards in County Durham - it's well educated with a significant commuter population using the good road links to Newcastle and Durham. But there's not been a great deal of demographic change and certainly nowhere near enough to explain a result like that.
