If it is true that I was the only one to tell them, then it is odd that they haven't replied to my email specifically. Perhaps I'll get a reply on Monday morning. I didn't even bother to delve into their website far enough to find a specific contact for the Elections department; I simply used the general enquiries email. To be honest, I was expecting them to (a) ignore my email and not change anything, or (b) reply by explaining the Scilly is not a "Principal Area". I doubt Scilly has an "Elections department" anyway! How Scilly of them! No wonder they make sure mistakes.

I think I now understand how Charlton Heston must have felt at the end of Planet of the Apes.

I think I now understand how Charlton Heston must have felt at the end of Planet of the Apes. What’s the connection between those two things?

As discussed on the BANES thread the election in Paulton (2) will be countermanded due to the death of one of the Green candidate, Tim Morgan.

If we haven’t already would it be worth starting a countermanded thread just until after the results so we’re not waiting on a Ward that’s actually been countermanded, and then we can transfer to this by-election thread?

Disagree - we don't need two threads keeping track of future polls in the same timescale, that would just cause confusion.

Whenever I calculate the percentage of votes for candidates in multi-member ward elections, I always do the number of votes for the candidate divided by the total number of ballot papers. A 3- member ward usually adds up to about 270%. In the abovementioned case, a total of 202% is reasonable, given the absence of any 2nd or 3rd Conservative or UKIP candidates. This is the least loony method available ftr.

I did only say until the weekend and then transfer back here as it’s a bit time consuming finding the countermanded polls amongst the regular by-elections in a thread of almost 120 posts already.

When was the last time there was a poll abandoned because of the death of a candidate on polling day?

When was the last time there was a poll abandoned because of the death of a candidate on polling day? The one I was involved in was Blackwall & Cubitt Town Ward of Tower Hamlets in 2014.

When was the last time there was a poll abandoned because of the death of a candidate on polling day? When's the last time a poll can be countermanded? Presumably moments before the result is declared?

Presumably moments before the result is declared? The law says the poll must be abandoned if proof to the RO's satisfaction of the death of a candidate is given before the declaration of result. So could be after the close of the poll.

I understand that there was a council in the Midlands last year where a Lib Dem candidate died, possibly/ probably on polling day, but it wasn't discovered until later (people were alerted that something was wrong when she didn't come to the count I gather), and everyone from the RO downwards decided that she had "officially" passed away after the declaration
