Completely agree - Greens and LDs will throw kitchen sink at Meon Valley I don't think Meon Valley on Hampshire CC is anywhere near safe for them - look at the recent district results for its constituent wards - they may scrape home on a 3-way split vote, but it's certainly not safe... Meon Valley will be seen as a practice run for the General Election especially if the polls remain as they are. It appears to straddle the Winchester and Hamble Valley constituencies.

It appears to straddle the Winchester and Hamble Valley constituencies. There's City Council elections there anyway so a full campaign is happening for all three parties (plus as you say the majority of the division is in Winchester constituency).

Assuming an outgoing councillor put the formal requests for a by-election in the same envelope as their resignation, what's the absolute latest they could resign for a by-election on 2 May?

West Dunbartonshire, Clydebank Central. Clare Steel (Labour) has ceased to be a councillor. Jinxed I wanted to answer my own question about which current local authority has gone the longest period of time without a by election. Using a couple of sources including andrewteale ‘s website, I think there are 6 local councils where it is more than a decade since the last by election ( 4 of which are Scottish) East Renfrewshire- last by election June 2001 Portsmouth- Feb 2008 Inverclyde- Jun 2009 West Dunbartonshire- Mar 2011 East Dunbartonshire- Aug 2012 Rochdale- Apr 2013 After the previous confusion about West Dunbartonshire, it will soon be leaving the list. Rochdale has had a narrow escape - of course there was the parliamentary byelection, and there is a vacancy under the six month rule, but still no council byelection.

I met her on a couple of occasions and was very impressed, seemed very bright and caring. Best of luck for whatever she is going on to. It must be a very tough shift for anyone in a responsible position in a social care authority. And the public culture of politics has certainly coarsened since my time. Parties must struggle to attract quality candidates in these circumstances. A large part of this is a direct consequence of this government’s relentless pressure on local government, both on resources and responsibilities. It’s an easy way to both make cuts and divert responsibility for those cuts.
