Isn't it a little harsh that elected mayors get automatically disqualified as councillors. Can't they have a few minutes to resign their seat with dignity?

I suppose candidates for a mayoral election could take a resignation letter with them to the count, to be handed in before the result is announced, but when it's clear that they've won, if they wanted to avoid being disqualified?

There are PCC elections in Wales on May 2nd, but these have a different electorate to local elections in Wales, so makes sense to keep them separate.

There’s also no requirement to bring ID for local elections in Wales so it also simplifies that somewhat.

The Tories seem very lucky right now that most of their casual vacancies are in relatively safe wards. Canford Cliffs is by far the safest Tory ward in BCP, Runnymede, Essex, the two recent Hampshire CC vacancies, all pretty safe seats.

I don't think Meon Valley on Hampshire CC is anywhere near safe for them - look at the recent district results for its constituent wards - they may scrape home on a 3-way split vote, but it's certainly not safe...
