Reading across from the Sunderland thread, Hendon ward election has been countermanded due to death of Tory candidate - so should be added to the 'coming up' list here.

This is a stupid election law. It was the norm for Westminster until 2010 when in two concurrent elections (2005 and 2010) two parliamentary constituencies (Staffordshire South and then Thirsk and Malton) had their general election postponed for the same reason. Following lobbying by the then MP for Staffordshire South (Patrick Cormack) the rules now state that : "In the event that an independent candidate dies during the election period the election continues as normal. If the deceased candidate did not receive the most votes, the winning candidate is declared elected and the election is not affected. If a candidate standing on behalf of a political party (or as a joint candidate standing on behalf of two or more parties) dies before polls open, the poll will be countermanded, meaning the poll will be cancelled"

Was it 2010 when the Euthanasia people threatened to nominate 650 terminally ill people as a protest?

Was it 2010 when the Euthanasia people threatened to nominate 650 terminally ill people as a protest? Not quite. It was raised as a hypothetical possibility that a suicidal person might stand as a candidate in multiple constituencies of cabinet members or party leaders, and kill himself before the election, thereby sabotaging the normal election of prominent politicians. The Cormack amendment reduced the circumstances in which the death of a candidate delays the election, but also removed the possibility of a candidate standing in more than one constituency at a time.

Rule 2(1) of the Local Elections (Principal Areas) (England and Wales) Rules states: "In computing any period of time for the purposes of the Timetable ... a Saturday or Sunday ... shall be disregarded, and any such day shall not be treated as a day for the purpose of any proceedings up to the completion of the poll nor shall the returning officer be obliged to proceed with the counting of the votes on such a day." The Isles Of Scilly St Marys by election is indeed happening on Saturday 20th May, so we might find out if it’s lawful scilly.gov.uk/by-election2 candidates. Tim Jones who came 13th out of 13 in 2021 ( 13 candidates for 12 seats) and John Peacock, who lives on St Agnes, one of the other islands

I'm not sure those rules are applicable to the Isles of Scilly. They apply to "principal areas" which are defined in rule 2(1) as The Isles of Scilly Council is not a county, district or London borough - it's sui generis.
If the Isles of Scilly Council is not a council of a principal area or a parish council, then perhaps it can make up its own election procedure under which Saturday polls are legal.
