I live in Wall End in the Borough of Newham. Luke Charters' resignation comes as little surprise - he was the Labour candidate in York Outer in 2017 and has been re-selected for a seat where he must fancy his chances of turning over the 10,000 Conservative majority.
Labour have been out this morning with flyers introducing their new candidate and while the deliverers didn't know the date of the by-election, I suspect he contests in Wall End and Boleyn will be on the same day.
The Conservatives did poll 30% in a by-election in East Ham Central in 2021 but the bigger threat in Wall End may be the Greens who were close behind the Conservative candidates last time. The Tories usually put up young respectable Hindu businessmen as their candidates and they fail miserably. The one wild card might be the independent Swarup Choudhury who stood as one of a small slate of anti-Labour left-leaning Independents. He got half as many votes as the top Tory but was still 925 behind the lowest Labour candidate.
As for Boleyn. the split last year was Labour 60%, Conservative 20%, Green 20% with 912 votes between the last Labour candidate and the top Tory.

Pretty sure I saw some social media of the greens out in Boleyn...I would imagine they would target one rather than both.

Didn't realise you were in Wall End stodge - I'm a former Chair of Wall End branch Labour Party, well over 30 years ago. Been here nearly 20 years myself. Presumably you'd know Ted Sparrowhawk, one of the last of the traditional WWC Labour Councillors - he retired a few years back. We seem to switch councillors fairly regularly - it's almost as though Wall End is "entry level" before they go to one of the more "important" Wards. I don't have a sense of a strong and vibrant local Labour organisation but they are well ahead of the other parties who can get small numbers Borough-wide for events, stalls and the like. Today the Conservatives have been in the High Street which isn't much help because that's not where Wall End is - they've had help from Barking, Dagenham & Rainham and Ilford North to put a canvass/delivery group together. They are wasting their time in the High Street and suspect they'll be door knocking near me before long. The Greens have chosen candidates for both Wall End and Boleyn and I suspect the latter will be their main effort.

yes, I knew Ted very well, and had a great deal of time for him. Would be great to see him again somehow or other. The councillors in my day were Jean Reeves (who told me she was Halachically Jewish), Theo Etherden who was very much a local lad being born in Cannin' Tahn, and Bashir Hafeez. The branch secretary was Frank Defoe, also an old-time East Ender.

The branch secretary was Frank Defoe, also an old-time East Ender. Ted retired in 2018 after serving 24 years as a Wall End Councillor. I used to say hello to him when I saw him in Sainsbury's in East Ham High Street but his health declined in the mid-2010s - I was actually surprised he stood again in 2014. Not sure if he's still in the area or has moved away. Coming back to today, and as Mrs Stodge and I were on our way up to the High Street, we saw the candidate and about 40 helpers advancing down Burges Road into the estate. Back in my politically active days, I would regard getting a dozen out as a triumph so whether Labour are concerned in any way about Wall End (can't imagine why) I don't know. The candidate had a huge Labour rosette. When I was an election agent in 1987, I got 20 out and did a rolling canvass down a road with 250 houses in it with the candidate being dragged from house to house to do meet and greet and me getting annoyed if he spent too much time with anyone (it's an old opposition trick to time waste on the doorstep and pretend to be a floating voter). To be able to get 40 out on a Sunday lunchtime - that's strength, I imagine the Conservatives being able to do that in parts of the Midlands and North these days. It's interesting the Tory "activity" in East Ham last weekend was largely from outside the constituency with activists from Dagenham, Barking and Ilford coming to help.

For someone regularly on a politics forum I should really pay more attention, but I’ve only just found out after the polling cards came in the post today that there is a by-election in my council ward on the 6th July (East Kilbride West)

It doesn’t look the sort of ward where any of the major 3 parties wouldn’t count themselves out (certainly not Labour or the SNP).

I haven’t but my house is more isolated in between farms and pretty much on a boundary between council areas so we don’t get an awful lot of door knocking here anyway!
