I find the 2022 results in Newham quite funny in the sense that, going into the election, Newham was a one-party state, with Labour having 60/60 councillors.

Despite this, Labour still managed gain seats and end up with 64 councillors (out of 66) - with the Greens winning two.

There can't be many councils where a party has gone in with 100% of the seats, an opposition party has won seats at the election, but the dominant party still manages to come out of the election with more councillors than they went in with.

Honest? He didn't abolish the special district. He gave himself to power to appoint the board and then named personal friends of him on it. That's more corrupt than previous politicians.

The reason for the Southwark by-election, as was the reason for one of the Newham by-elections, is that the Labour councillor has been selected for a winnable Conservative held parliamentary seat outside of London.

I do wonder if this will be the start of a wave of resignations over the summer and autumn as Labour councillors decide to focus on their parliamentary campaigns - I think it's less necessary to stand down if you've been selected for a seat which you already represent as a councillor, but much more beneficial, both electorally (removes some of the sting of the likely attack of why should we elect you when you already represent another part of the country as a councillor) and from a time commitment perspective where the parliamentary seat you've been selected for is miles away.

Incidentally, the Southwark by-election will be on June 29th.
