Hugh Findlay (Con) and Richard Parker (Lab) both stood here for their parties last year. Richard Fettes (SFP) stood in Pentland Hills and Gary Smith (Libertarian) stood in Drum Brae/Gyle. Elaine Miller was the protestor who flashed MSPs during the trans debate, Pete Gregson has been a leading figure in protests against the City Centre West to East Link (the issue of compensation to local traders was what prompted the resignation of the outgoing SNP councillor).

None of the candidates contested this ward last May. Amelia Allao (CPA) stood in Stroud Green, Sean O’Donovan was the unsuccessful Labour candidate in Fortis Green.

Again, none of the candidates stood in this ward last year – Muraad Ali Chaudry contested Hounslow South for the Conservatives, Chaitan Shah stood in Heston Central for the Lib Dems and Rashid Wahab in Osterley & Spring Grove for the Greens.

Pete Gregson is the person who stood outside the Labour Party Conference in 2017 with a banner so antisemitic that then party leader Jeremy Corbyn called it disgusting. He was expelled not just from the Labour Party but also from his union the GMB for antisemitism - it takes a very high level of antisemitism to be expelled from a trade union. My views on him & his activities can be guessed pretty easily.

The Lib Dems will almost certainly gain the Edinburgh seat which will presumably make that ward the only ward in Scotland with a full slate of councillors from the same political party.

At the present moment, I believe, but it has happened before - for example Labour gained had all the seats in both Fortissat and Thorniewood wards (north Lanarkshire) following by-elections in the last council term.

In the interests of pedantry, I should also point out that Arran (North Ayrshire) is now a single member ward with a Conservative councillor, so would technically count as well...

I think we have had previous council byelections in such conditions and, remarkably, some people still turned up to vote on the day.

Apparently it's kicking off outside the polling stations in Heston West with the Greens complaining (obviously in the nicest possible way) about the Indy leafleting outside the polling stations.
