It would be interesting to see if Biddulph Labour Party has become any less moribund as for the last few elections the only work, other than the candidates, at the last few elections has been organised by Baroness Anderson of Stoke and Stoke North CLP. Indeed. There was something of a hint in who was tweeting about the byelections that the Biddulph branch (which has been very weak for years) had been heavily supported in the byelections by the much better organised Leek branch making regular campaign trips. Leek’s certainly sprung to life with Charlotte Atkins and Bill Cawley; am not sure if Chris Wood is still in Biddulph, but for many years he was carrying the Party almost singlehandedly in the town. Slightly OT, but adding to Andrew’s Preview, Biddulph Grange was for many years a hospital where people were sent from Stoke post-op to recuperate in the cleaner Moorlands air; whilst avoiding it as a patient I spent many hours visiting school friends in there.

I think some people thought Pragasam was a he and then discovered she was indeed a she. It was only when I read Andrew's profiles I realised Charlie Smith was also a she. I do wish these candidates would leave their pronouns somewhere obvious I made a similar boob about Labour's candidate in the West Lancashire byelection Well the boobs should be the giveaway.

Having a brief look around Biddulph North on Google Streetview, it looks very desirable and a place where the Conservatives should be very strong. Excellent result for Labour I'd say

Excellent result for Labour I'd say Not disagreeing with that, but before the deceased councillor won in 2009, the Conservatives hadn’t won a County Council seat in Biddulph since 1985. It has been strong area for Labour until the last 10 years. It’s a very good result for Labour in the type of place that has trended away from them.

The exit of Christina Jebb from Endon certainly pretty much gifted Biddulph South and Endon to the Tories, but I’ve never known why they let us have a free run at Biddulph North in 2009 when we the Brown government was on life support. The demise of the mining vote hasn’t particularly helped either.

As I've had family living there since the '90s, my perspective is that Biddulph has developed a great deal since then. It was still a recovering ex-mining town 30 years ago but has had a lot of housing development which has taken it several notches up the social scale. Opening Biddulph Grange Gardens in 1991 was a big boon in the long term. Biddulph used to be a lot smaller and poorer than Congleton just over the Cheshire border, but has clearly caught up.

A pattern very typical for towns of its general profile in the Midlands and borne out by census statistics.

Would this be the same Bill Cawley that was a Stoke councillor for many years? Went to York University in the late 1970s?

It would indeed (don’t know about the York University bit, slightly before my time, but he was a Stoke councillor during the 80’s/90’s).
