Looking on the prediction thread, Richard Cromwell had 69/22/9. Pretty impressive!

Perhaps relatively unsurprising. A well-known local Labour candidate against a non-local (apparently) Conservative candidate.

Local Democracy Reporter at the Biddulph count has been told they'll count both district and county seat by midnight. I've heard that one before ... Ahem.

Midnight came and went- I thought they got the county result out pretty quickly- the district one has only half the votes, but may be a bit more complicated...... and then came through while I was posting!

All in all a very good week for Labour.

There have been some mutterings that given the big opinion poll lead Labour should be doing more consistently well in council by-elections. So far this year Labour has really hit the mark with some very good results. Early days yet but some signs that elections are starting to catch up with the polling.

Perhaps relatively unsurprising. A well-known local Labour candidate against a non-local (apparently) Conservative candidate. As always local factors are important, and the appalling turnout makes the Staffordshire results a test of relative activism more than electorate sentiment. But poor candidate selection and poor groundwork are, of course, as indicative of a party’s problems as the results themselves. As is standing down one candidate in implicit endorsement of an independent presumably to prevent a Labour double win in the district seats (as one Labour candidate clearly had stronger recognition than the other).

What you may not know is that Ian Lawson had a very large personal vote. When he was well, he would contribute a very long letter each week which would be printed in the Biddulph Chronicle across several columns. The Chronicle series, because they have stayed independent, are very traditional local newspapers reporting well on local politics in a way that has gone from many towns, and the letters page is particularly lively as a place where issues are discussed. I suspect it's one of the reasons Independent candidates have done well in Biddulph town, though it's possible for party politicians to get a good reputation as well.

I suspect part of the low turnout was the weather, my favourite nurse here lives in Biddulph Moor and was snowed in until just after midday yesterday. It would be interesting to see if Biddulph Labour Party has become any less moribund as for the last few elections the only work, other than the candidates, at the last few elections has been organised by Baroness Anderson of Stoke and Stoke North CLP.

I think some people thought Pragasam was a he and then discovered she was indeed a she. It was only when I read Andrew's profiles I realised Charlie Smith was also a she. I do wish these candidates would leave their pronouns somewhere obvious I made a similar boob about Labour's candidate in the West Lancashire byelection

Indeed. There was something of a hint in who was tweeting about the byelections that the Biddulph branch (which has been very weak for years) had been heavily supported in the byelections by the much better organised Leek branch making regular campaign trips.

Well that is an area where actually getting some councillors elected can be a significant help.
