One question. Getting into the party rooms at the moment also means declaring a party allegiance which is shown on the user list and in every post. If we go for the option of ideology/sexual orientation/religious affiliation based rooms, would they also have to show up for everyone else to see?

I think that it will if the Admin team are quite ruthless in immediately removing all off-topic and cloggers posts out of any thread and placing them in the most appropriate sub-forum without recourse. That's what I was going to say too. At the moment it's hard to justify removing posts that derail threads, but if you have your own subfora with innumerable ways to discuss an area of interest, then there's no excuse. I agree with sometimes removing off-topic posts, but do they really need to be moved to separate “rooms” (I don’t exactly know what “rooms” are, as I’m not a member of any of them). Can’t they just be moved to the most appropriate off-topic thread instead, or create a new one?? There are several threads on this forum where the first few posts clearly indicate that they have been spun-off from off-topic posts on other threads. It would be a shame if an interesting off-topic discussion suddenly disappeared behind the wall of a “room” that one may or may not wish to join.

Sounds like a hell of a lot of extra work for the admin team and open to all sorts of problems with potentially grey area discussions that may or may not get moved somewhere and people complaining that said posts were moved/not moved.

Not all affiliations or groups show up: doktorb🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ is in a group of one as is timmullen1 but you can only see non aligned or Labour as the descriptor. I shall not create a room or subforum etc that puts members at risk of doxxing (or another risk) or where I'd need some sort of actual proof that people were in that group, or were genuine allies, for me to manage the risk. This is quite a different prospect to a disability/neurodiversity/LGBT network in a workplace where people know each other and discretion can be assumed. We've had doxxing in the past on here and I won't tolerate it again.

Yes, one attraction of this forum is that it is structured quite simply - and I don't see the virtue of making things more baroque and complicated. If a few members want to discuss something sensitive away fron the public gaze - isn't that what PMs are for?

I don’t exactly know what “rooms” are, as I’m not a member of any of them. We have various political group subfora which people refer to as rooms. Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem, Green, Nationalist (Plaid, not the NF). The denizens of each room set the criteria for access: the blue room (Conservative) generally lets in right leaning people, the red room (Labour) need you to be a confirmed member or supporter (with international allies welcome, I think that's right) and so on. Each room discusses what it wants: I've got no idea what goes on in each one as I don't look (I'm the only person who can see all of them). Generally you can only be in one at a time (some people are in both the Conservative and Brexit/Reform rooms,) and although there isn't an officially defined cooling off period, I would be reluctant to add someone straightaway to a room if they'd just left an opposing party. There might be some crossover between the Greens and the Nationalist room given the Plaid/GPEW alliance and the SNP/SGP situation but as far I know no one has ever asked.

Apologies if the question has already been asked or answered: Is there an inbuilt 1-1 relationship between poster and room? Or can this potentially be more nuanced? I ask because there might well be a strong case for ideology- rather than party-based 'room's. For example: - a socially conservative room - an Atheist room - a Libertarian/Classical Liberal room - a gay room - a TERF-sympathetic room And so on. As mentioned above, it can be as nuanced as we want. Some people are in two rooms (although this is limited to people in the blue room and people who are also in the Brexit/Reform room). I'm happy to create rooms if people want them and will add a poll. I wouldn't be averse to a 'trade union members' room but that's my personal view. There is activity in each room, with the blue room the most active. I've no idea what the red, yellow, green or nationalist rooms talk about but I assume there is the same breadth of opinions or random discussion (the one time I ventured into the red room I saw a thread about theatrical adverts which isn't what I expected!) and at the moment this seems to satisfy needs. SCANDAL ! Administrator breaches confidentiality of party room. Reveals socialist interest in matters theatrical.

The Conservative room is de facto a right of centre idelogical room rather than a Conservative Party room.

(the one time I ventured into the red room I saw a thread about theatrical adverts which isn't what I expected!) and at the moment this seems to satisfy needs. How dreadful. There was me imagining such a room being a hotbed of intrigue, factionalism and slagging off the bastards in the other rooms with dubious innuendo and gossip. "A mate of mine knew Boogie from Scottish politics, said 'e saw him shaving his legs before a council meeting! He's a wrong 'un!" Instead it's mundane, humdrum stuff about theatres? My childhood illusions have been shattered.

Come now, clearly about theatrical adverts that were clearly not pure enough in their theatrical ideology and therefore should be suspended/expelled for being insufficiently theatrist! 😜

I wonder if the red room let in people who registered their support solely to vote for Jeremy Corbyn...
