There are 57 seats on Plymouth City Council.

Immediately after the council election on 5 May 2022, the composition was Con 24, Lab 24, Independent members 8, Green Party 1. Of the Independent members, 6 had been elected as Conservatives and 2 as Labour.

In the period leading up to the annual meeting of the Council, the Conservatives welcomed back 5 Independent members "with open arms" and one of the Independent members (previously Labour) joined the Green Party.

So the council composition at the time of the annual meeting was Con 29, Lab 24, Independent members 2, Green Party 2.

Since then,
* another Independent (Terri Beer) has rejoined the Conservatives
* the former Conservative leader, ousted from his position last March, has been suspended from the his own group
* he has now formed the Independent Alliance Group, with Terri Beer (who has left the Conservatives again) and the 1 remaining Independent (who was previously Labour)
* on 15 November another Conservative was suspended from the group and is sitting as an ungrouped Independent
* on 24 November, the council published Notices of Vacancy, after 2 Conservatives resigned following their move to Gloucester, creating the two vacancies above
* on 8 December, another Conservative resigned from the group and joined the Independent Alliance Group

So the council composition is now Con 24, Lab 24, The Independent Alliance 4, Green Party 2, ungrouped Independent 1, Vacant 2

One thing I'd missed when doing the original post - Andrea Johnson (Con candidate in Moor View) was councillor for Compton ward from 2018-22 (didn't defend her seat last year).

The fact that Labour's vote is up in numerical terms, despite a low turnout byelection on a rainy day in January, is a notable sign.

Can't see the Tories running Plymouth for too much longer. Anyone recall how many of the independents are ex-Tory and therefore likely to back a Tory administration?

One note of caution: these are another couple to add to the bulging file of 'defending party does really badly when the previous councillors move away from the area,' Especially the 'long drawn out resignation' section.

So health warning when diagnosing that this means that the Tories must lose Plymouth Council / Devon parliamentary seats / everything forever.

I thought all but one were ex-Tory. Whether they would support a Tory administration, though, is another question altogether- I thought the ex -Torys were virulently anti- Tory administration?

An excellent Labour result. I did note the very strong claimed (and seemingly accepted) local connections of our candidate and the more “professional candidate” feel of the Tory in the descriptions they gave to the local paper.
