Is it just me that thinks this vacancy is being filled with indecent haste? Ruth Ling only died a week ago.

Although not yet posted on the council's website, the timetable for the Codnor & Waingroves ward by-election in Amber Valley, Derbyshire has been set and polling day will be 18 July 2013. There is nothing on the website to suggest this date.

East Midlands Lib Dems seem to think the Amber Valley by-election will be on 1st August. If it's true the notice should be published next week.

Given the timing and the difficulty of holding byelections in August, there was an impossible choice between rushing ahead with a byelection or delaying it until September. Surely there would be nothing unreasonable in having the by-election in September. For example, the one in Amber Valley, also caused by the death of a (Labour) councillor, is expected to be on 1st August some 3 months after his sad death on 3rd May. On a similar timescale the Lambeth election could have been on 12th September.

Cllr Revd David Clues (Lib Dem, LB Brent, Dudden Hill ward) is said to be 'in the process of' resigning his seat now he has moved to Brighton. I like the "now that". He moved to Brighton in December 2011.
