According to Redcar's website, an independent has won an uncontested election in Lingdale & Stanghow ward of Redcar & Cleveland UA which was due to be held on 5th December. I can't find any news reports of who died or resigned. The ward map on the Redcar site does not even list Lingdale & Stanghow as a ward, but there is a ward with that name in Lockwood Parish Council, so it looks like Redcar have been very sloppy with multiple announcements (Election, Persons Nominated, Uncontested Election). Don't you just love inefficient council electoral services departments? Seriously, I was thinking about this a week or two back, and Im thought some concerted action might help. Quite a lot of people on here probably, like me, visit a lot of council websites; and you probably all get the same frequent popups about doing a feedback survey about the website. If we all made an effort to fill in those surveys, and made similar comments about the electoral services section, they might take some notice. I'd like to see the following: - All election notices for by elections should be on a single page, entitled 'Vacancies and Forthcoming Elections'; this should include notices of vacancy, notices of election, statements of persons nominated - for all by elections from parish/town council up within the area.
- All election notices should be in the same format (I'd prefer PDF, but would others prefer DOC?)
- The page should have its own RSS feed so that we can sign up to get automatic notifications
- SOPNs should, if possible, be posted on the day nominations close; or at the very least, on the day and at the time the website says they'll be published (and the website should say when they'll be published.
- The website should indicate whether the count is the evening of polling day, or the following morning.
- By election results should be publicised via the council twitter feed _when the count is finished_, not the next day or following Monday.
- Election results for main elections should be published as a single file for all wards, again preferably as a PDF, and definitely not as scans of handwritten sheets.
Anything else? Or anything anyone violent disagrees with? Just completed my first council website survey with this response - to West Lindsey

Every reference to an election on the single page you mention should either be election-dated or marked as "uncalled" - the common practice of providing a link that just says "Ancoats & Clayton by-election" is not good enough, since you think this is a reference to the election that took part a few months ago when it is in fact about another election next month.
Ideally I'd like a HTML table with each election given a line, and the first column containing date of election or "uncalled", second column containing a link to a notice of vacancy, third column containing a link to notice of election, fourth containing link to Persons Nominated, fifth containing result or uncontested result, with the columns filling up gradually over the weeks. An indication of the incumbent's party description would be nice too, but I'm not sure if that might be considered to be unduly influencing the electorate.. but IMO you should be told who the incumbent party was so you can deliberately vote for or against that party depending on how happy you are with what they've done.

At local level, it is very often the individual councillor, rather than the incumbent party, who influences an elector about how effective or poor they are of course.
