The seat where I was born and raised, and first entered politics. Edit: and for those interested, the home seat of Ian McShane, Matthew Kelly, Nurse Gladys from Open All Hours, and for football fans also the home of David White and "The Urmston Makalele", Michael Johnson. Duncan Edwards lived here as a Manchester United player - I remember being shown the semi where he lived not far from the ground. He did indeed, as did a lot of other United players (including Ian McShane's father). By the time I was a kid they were all out in Worsley, Hale Barns and Bramhall.

Footballers were more "normal" then. Ryan Giggs's girlfriend of the time was one of my teachers, and I know a few people who played at the local youth football club with various players' kids. And City had digs for new arrivals above the Victoria Wine next to the M60!

Along with Threshers, who live on online.

This is the constituency where I work on the days when I'm in the office. I'll be following developments with interest. The seat where I was born and raised, and first entered politics. Edit: and for those interested, the home seat of Ian McShane, Matthew Kelly, Nurse Gladys from Open All Hours, and for football fans also the home of David White and "The Urmston Makalele", Michael Johnson. Lynda Baron - nurse Gladys from Open All Hours - is surely better known as Auntie Mabel from Come Outside. "Pippin! It's time to fly!"

Schmeichel definitely lived there (and my brother saw him in Bramhall Park from time to time) but didn't know that Steve Bruce did as well - I think this might have been after his time there as he'd moved on from Man United by then.

Victoria Wine! Now you're dating yourself. Going down Vicky's to get a four-pack of tinnies was the birthright of every sheepish-looking fifteen year-old. I may or may not have been that 15 year old in 1980. Although I was managing to get served in pubs with increasing success by that age. Vicky Wine on South Road didn't care as long as you had the dosh. Like the corner shop nearby which would sell anyone fags, although if you looked like you might not have started puberty yet, the owner would check that "for your nan, right?" - like Nan would have 2 single B&H.

Yes, Bruce definitely lived there with Schmeichel. They were next-door (possibly but one) neighbours, although there are only about a dozen houses in the cul-de-sac anyway. At that time there were plenty of other Manchester footballers in Bramhall too, admittedly on some of the fancier roads, but certainly nothing like when it became all about Alderley Edge, Mottram St Andrew and Prestbury.

More recently Steve Bruce lived in Ponteland, the millionaires quarter near Newcastle. My son-in-law, Nick, was mouthing off about ‘that fat bastard Makem Bruce’ (who was then managing Sunderland) in the Diamond Inn in Ponteland. Nick was not aware that immediately behind him was Steve Bruce himself! Nick is pretty big and strong but I wouldn’t back him against Steve Bruce!

Remember the immortal words of Carter in 'Get Carter'. They apply here. "You're a big man, but you're in poor shape.....Behave yourself." (Thump! Thump!!!) One good punch and Bruce would drop like a sack of shit.

It's not really Ponteland - the old village on the main road - that is the "millionaire's quarter", but rather Darras Hall, a modern development somewhat off the main drag that has the big houses. This is the area where convicted rapist Iorwerth Hoare moved to after he scooped a big prize on the Lottery, this making the papers after it was discovered that he'd bought the ticket while on parole from prison. It's very leafy, big plots, houses set well back from the road, you get the picture.

It has a paved area in front of the house that will accommodate ten or more cars. They have recently sold half their rear garden, including the Tennis Courts and the orchard, to someone who is building an equally large house there. Nick's father is a semi-retired surgeon who still does the odd operation in Dubai.
