Sigh. We'd just opened our selection process, which will now probably have to be expedited.

This is the constituency where I work on the days when I'm in the office. I'll be following developments with interest.

so for the second time she succeeds Bev Hughes. Hopefully the last, as Hughes is absolutely dreadful. She has absolutely failed with handling GMP.

As has been said Labour already have a candidate, but Andy Burnham would have to resign the Mayoralty to return to the Commons, as that Mayoralty includes the Police and Crime Commissioner powers. This is the same reason why Tracy Brabin had to resign her Commons seat when elected West Yorkshire Mayor.

The whole Burnham returning to parliament theory was based very much on him becoming the leader in waiting for after Starmer crashed and burned. Things have certainly moved on from there and Starmer is looking more like the next Prime Minister (assuming Sunak lasts until the next election) than anything else, so where, oh where, would the motivation for Burnham's return be now?

Well, Burnham has said he might like to lead the party in the future, but that he recognises that there is no vacancy; he will obviously now realise that a vacancy will not occur any time soon either. He will have to wait and his time may well have gone before he gets another realistic tilt at it.

The Labour candidate is Andrew Western He will have to be re-confirmed as such by the party's NEC for the byelection, but that should be a formality barring something genuinely unexpected.

Well as much as Starmer is going to be PM politics changes very quickly and questions about leadership can come about at any point. There isn’t a set period of blind loyalty just because someone has won an election so Burnham might want to be in parliament and maybe even on the front bench to see how things develop?

Quite, and Burnham is eight years younger than Starmer. However, there's no way Burnham wants to be back there at the moment.

Edit: and for those interested, the home seat of Ian McShane, Matthew Kelly, Nurse Gladys from Open All Hours, and for football fans also the home of David White and "The Urmston Makalele", Michael Johnson.

Duncan Edwards lived here as a Manchester United player - I remember being shown the semi where he lived not far from the ground.
