It makes me wonder what sort of demographics there are in the local community. There must be some people (more than those numbers suggest) who are functionally - even if not politically - of the capitalist / employer / business / reactionary / traditionalist / conservative class(es), and who would “normally” vote Conservative in any other geographical location. |

North Korean style results Linacre ward is largely terraced housing, some estates - very white working class. The thing is that it's Bootle, and it's "normal" to vote Labour as those results indicate. So it's hard to know what they might vote elsewhere. This time there's a good local Labour candidate in his twenties and an Independent. That's it. The Tories and the LibDems aren't standing and I think it fair to say that neither would have made 100 votes. |

And there was a previous one the Vectis National party who stood at the 1970 General Election and a few council elections after that.
Vectis, of course, being the Roman name for the Isle of Wight.

As reported on the defections thread, but also somewhat relevant here: Gerald Bowers (Ranskill, Bassetlaw District Council) Conservative to Independent. Cllr Bowers was the leader of the Conservative Group on Bassetlaw District Council. In his resignation statement, he says that he cannot support the Conservative candidate in the forthcoming Sutton by-election on 24th November. "The in-fighting and name calling and blame culture is not something I want to be involved with. Here in Bassetlaw we currently have a local By Election taking place. The Conservative Party candidate Mr Fraser McFarland is also the Chairman of the local Conservative Association in addition he’s also the Chief of Staff for the Bassetlaw MP – Brendan Clarke-Smith.
I do NOT support the Conservative Party candidate in this election. As the Leader of the Bassetlaw District Council Conservative Group (Elected Councillors), I made it very clear to Fraser McFarland that we did not want him as a councillor in our group.
He does not possess the personal skills or communication skills to represent residents of Sutton Ward on the District Council or on any other council. (Although one of the elected Conservative Councillors has decided to support him)

I have long taken it to be an absolute 'Given' that is their total status on everything most of the time. Largely now fat plonkers with rainbow laces, smiling at Albanian criminals and serving tea the gormless protester arseholes glued to the road. Fat, useless, unfit for any purpose. Maybe we should always take that as our given starting poinr and let them prove that they are right? Surprised they have time for such an investigation when there are pensioners to push about for not wearing masks, Albanians to be helped, protesters to be serviced, and innocent home dwellers to be assaulted mob-handed because of some light-hearted tweet. Default position being the police are always in the wrong until they demonstrate otherwise. |

I went for an Zardozny win in Ashfield. I don’t think I would predict against them winning very lightly
Whether they are in the wrong, or whether the police are, at the stage where we don’t know, I didn’t think a bit of police involvement would do them any electoral harm.

I can understand your attitude to the police, but what has that got to do with the fact that a local council by-election has been won by an Ashfield Independents candidate rather than any other party candidate? |
