Blacon is one of those places that shocks people who have a certain view of Chester (likewise with the Lache). It's better than it was in the Nineties but still quite grim. It is quite cut off from the city proper and most of the jobs are probably at the industrial estate. When was the Lache built? I thought it was 1950s when I went through but some of the pictures online look 1930s. Building started in 1931.

Is Lache pronounced ‘lash’ or in some other way? Like the latch on a door. Edit: actually some people say it as if it were "laitch". But I've always known it referred to as in latch. Any Cestrians on here? The Cestrian I work with says it LAYCHE. His parents live pretty close to it.

Why is it called City of Chester anyway? Why not just Chester? Most other Cities don’t have “City” in their constituency name. It’s one of those annoyingisms, like the constituencies of Brighton / Southampton / Plymouth not just being called “North”, “South”, “East” or “West” or whatever.

Why is it called City of Chester anyway? Why not just Chester? Presumably to distinguish itself from the County of Chester? Durham was generally referred to as Durham City for similar reasons.

The official name of Cheshire as the time the seat was created was County Palatine of Chester, so, it was a case like Durham where the county and the county town have the same name.

What happens to Matheson's staff (or any resigning MP)? Do they stay on until the new one is elected, to assist the MPs covering? Or do they get made redundant immediately? The notice of redundancy is issued straight away, although some may be employed for a short period to wind down the office, not least dealing with the GDPR obligations for disposing of the casework and other details of constituents kept on file. There is no formal handover procedure with the newly elected replacement MP.

There is no formal handover procedure with the newly elected replacement MP. I know there is no formal handover, which is a pity. I was more interested in what happens to the staff. It feels rather harsh: obviously it goes with the territory but it isn't a run of the mill redundancy.

Eddie Izzard may lose his claim to be the first trans MP, Emily Brothers, who is also blind since a childhood illness, and was PPC in Sutton and Cheam in 2015, has announced she’s seeking the nomination.

The writ was moved first thing this morning.
Does this mean the by-election will be on a different date to West Lancashire?

Jamie Wallis beats them both. OK, first elected as Trans, Wallis announced post election I believe.

I don't think Emily has any connection with Chester & would be very surprised if she gets anywhere close to the nomination.

Grew up "near" Chester and went to Chester College. OK, I stand corrected but I still very much doubt she'll get it. Overwhelmingly Labour are selecting local councillors from the area they are seeking selection for. Heard Michael Crick discuss this, and noted that local government leaders don't always transfer well to parliament. I think it's a combination of councillors much more likely to be Starmer loyalists and a reaction against the SPAD generation.
