why is it always Vote Green Party? We don't say Vote Labour Party or Vote Conservative Party. Vote Green is just a better slogan. It is unlikely Labour or Conservative is going to be the family name of one of the candidates, unlike Green. It's more to do with the tendency among voters not highly engaged with party politics to blur "Green" up with "Greenpeace" or other campaigns outside of electoral politics. (That said, I'm pleased that one of our target candidates here for next day is indeed called Green!)

I've previously mentioned having won a vote in precisely this way in a ward where no Green Party candidates were standing and a voter had scrawled "I want to vote Green" on their ballot. When the disputed papers came before us agents, I was able to successfully claim it as support for one of my candidates, Lawrence Green! Fair call.

Once when I was a (much younger) agent a voter scrawled bastards on the ballot paper but for some reason the Tory agent wasn’t happy when I suggested it was a vote for his candidates. I now realise this was petty and immature and would never do it again…

I now realise this was petty and immature and would never do it again… We had one this year which had "unelectable" against our candidate, and "corrupt bastards" against each of the others. I was sorely tempted to argue for it. It was in the ward we gained. I don't think they'll make that mistake again!

I *love* that they're tagging "Shit Chester". 'The Slug in a Sarong', apparently. Talking of which, what happened to the Idle Toad?

I'm now imagining a Conservative party candidate called Thomas Labour I recall Labour had a candidate in Spelthorne called Damian Welfare which I thought reflected a certain stereotype! Indeed, I knew him a bit at Cambridge. He was a member of the Labour Students & also active (unusually for a left-winger) in the Union Society. I'd forgotten about him until you mentioned him, so thanks for that!

I now realise this was petty and immature and would never do it again… I would have taken that in good humour. Just a friendly joke. There's a lot worse said at counts. Corbynistas and Liberal Democrats are generally the worst. Minor parties the best.

I knew somebody in the Stirling University Conservatives called Mike(?) Welfare, he dressed as though a young version of the Spitting Image Norman Tebbitt puppet.

2001 as well (when some thought he might win after Labour's 1997 near-miss, instead there was a modest pro-Tory swing)

It was David Welfare who stood for Labour in Spelthorne 1987.

According to Wiki, yes. However, it's an error. It was definitely Damian Welfare & I will edit it now. Since I knew him I specifically remember that he was selected to stand there.

Welfare is an unusual surname. Are there many of them active politically?

Welfare is an unusual surname. Are there many of them active politically? One of the two teachers at my brief period at a rural Kent primary school was a Miss Welfare. I can recall more people of that surname in greater Maidstone at that time (50/51).

From the list of agents and some tweets it looks like there are 9 candidates Jeanie Barton [1] Paul Bowers (Green) Samantha Dixon (Lab) Cain Griffiths (UKIP) Rob Herd (Lib Dem) Richard Hewison (Rejoin EU) Howling Laud Hope (OMRLP) [2] Chris Quartermaine (Freedom Alliance) Liz Wardlaw (Con) [1] Maybe this candidate from Wrexham's local elections this year[2] so not the GB News journalist then
