As I understand it, the death of a sovereign in the mibble of a general election campaign causes the general election to be delayed, but I don’t know why some people might assume that this would also apply to local elections or by-elections. Election law is a total minefield. High time something was done to rationalise it.

Be no football for Kingstonian this week, their showing their respect for the newly proclaimed King by being knocked out in the prelims of the Fa Cup.

Obviously exceedingly minor, but I presume that Tony Eggington's vote was 12680 and not 12860 as that would be consistent with a 67 vote lead.

Steaks on a plane indeed....Bolton is a strange place. We’ve got Steaks on a Train, an old Pulman railway carriage that’s a restaurant (when I was a youngster it was the Pulman Steak Bar, and I opened the wheelchair ramp into it).

Does anyone know if the Greens have been working Bolney?
It feels like the Lib Dems are the most likely gainers on paper but several similar wards in Surrey/ Sussex have seen Green gains recently.

I'm not sure whether these count as real elections or not, but there are also some City of London elections on 15 September:
Bishopsgate (Alderman) - 2x Ind Cordwainer (Common) - 3x Ind Cripplegate (Alderman) - 2x Ind

Interesting to see that Baroness (Patricia) Scotland is one of those stepping aside to cause an election.

I clearly underestimated the personal vote of the deceased incumbent. Big swing, small ward, tiny turnout.

It might be a common name in those parts.

I clearly underestimated the personal vote of the deceased incumbent. Big swing, small ward, tiny turnout. I expect turnout on the day was very tiny indeed, and that most of these votes were postal. There will have been some very quiet polling stations today, with campaigning presumably suspended for the last week of the campaign.

I wonder if no campaigning in the last week helped Labour, for whom voting is more of a habit, more than the Independents, who may rely more on local campaigning.
