Iain Malcolm has not applied for Labour selection. At the same time Cllr Mark Walsh has been approached to stand. www.shieldsgazette.com/news/local-news/labour-stalwarts-back-local-lad-1-5556639Sounding like a deal with CLP has been done...so tomorrow I will probably be proven wrong :-) But maybe it is just that CLP officers and backroom boys realized Malcolm couldn't pass the NEC test and to have a local candidate they had to switch to somebody else. Anyway I didn't realize that time travelling was possible! Nothing can stop Tom Watson or Keith Vaz. Not even time travelling.

I believe that the Returning Officer is wrong and that you are correct.

I can see UKIP getting over 30% for the first time in a byelection if we run another good campaign...

Anyway I didn't realize that time travelling was possible! The BBC is currently running a documentary on the subject on Saturday evenings. I hear that it's a rather popular show, maybe you should watch it.

Labour shortlist
Mark Walsh (South Tyneside Cllr. Ward within the constituency) Emma Lewell-Buck (South Tyneside Cllr. Ward in Jarrow) Lewis Atkinson (from Gateshead CLP. Former local election candidate in South Tyneside and Sunderland. Stood for the NEC in 2012) Paul Williams (GP doctor from Stockton)
Pretty uncontroversial outcome.

I thought that the standing orders specified that there must be at least one Islington Councillor and a SPAD on the shortlist for any winnable seat?

Richard Elvin also stood in Middlesbrough. Labour shortlist Mark Walsh (South Tyneside Cllr. Ward within the constituency) Emma Lewell-Buck (South Tyneside Cllr. Is there a shortage of available Islington Cllrs nowadays?

HE I presume has not represented the party as an elected candidate before (not according to Labour list) so is a wild card but with his background could be popular.

Lol, don't think south shields would put up with another parachuted candidate. Good call from labour on south shields, no all-women shortlist or someone being parachuted in from Islington.

It's a list which shows that Labour can behave itself on these matters. I assume there must have been hundreds of applications, so choosing a genuinely local list is to be acknowledged as a good thing.

As EAL pointed out in another place, in the round Labour candidates are probably *more* local than they were in the "good old days".....
"Parachuting" is something vastly exaggerated by the party's opponents.

It turns out that the opportunity to hold the byelection on 2 May has arisen. The House of Commons will be sitting tomorrow, and a writ moved on 10 April would mean polling day between 1 May and 8 May.

Is that my homework for the week, or do you need it before close-of-play?

First I think we need to define what a "parachute" is - does it depend on the given party's chances of winning the seat? For example, do we rule out O'Farrell because he had no chance of winning?
